Volkswagen Super Bowl Commercial: Will Car Company Top Last Year's Epic Spot?

Alex KayJun 7, 2018

Volkswagen is returning to the Star Wars theme, yet again, to move product during the Super Bowl.

It may be even better than their 2011 advertisement.

They had a smash hit on their hands last year when they debuted the award-winning spot entitled “The Force.”

The one-minute tribute features a young boy in a Darth Vader costume unsuccessfuly attempting to channel “the Force." That is, until his father comes home with a new Passat, which starts it wirelessly, leading the boy to believe he started it by using his powers.

It’s a touching tribute to youth and an iconic film and it worked wonderfully for the company, which is certainly why they are going back to the formula this year.

According to Rob Neill of MSNBC, the automaker is recreating the Mos Eisley Cantina on Tatooine from scratch to show off the new Beetle, which somehow has made its way into the bar.

The spot is shrouded in secret right now, but VW has released a teaser entitled “The Bark Side,” featuring a number of dogs dressed as characters from the films, barking out the familiar theme song from the space opera.

This, most likely, will not be airing during the Super Bowl, but rather something put together to drum up interest for the actual spot. Either way, it's sure to be a trip for fans of Luke Skywalker and the rest of the legendary cast.

The still shots released from the upcoming one-minute spot look incredible, and it shows that Volkswagen values their relationship with Lucasfilms—the production company that they will be joining forces with once again.

Make sure you tune into the Super Bowl this coming Sunday to catch the new Beetle advertisement and many more that are sure to become part of pop culture.
