2012 NFL Free Agents: Top 5 Running Backs Available This Offseason

Zach KruseJan 31, 2012

The following are the top five running backs available during the 2012 NFL free agency period:

1 (t). Matt Forte, Bears; Ray Rice, Ravens; Marshawn Lynch, Seahawks

I only rank the three together at the top because it's more than likely that each will be franchise-tagged by their respective teams, which does make them free agents right now, but only in name.

Lynch has the best chance of getting an opportunity to test the free-agent market, but he was the Seahawks' best offensive player throughout 2011. The Bears and Ravens simply can't afford to let their lead backs get away.

2. Mike Tolbert, Chargers

Tolbert couldn't be more different than former Chargers running back Darren Sproles, but he could be a similarly impactful free-agent pickup sometime this offseason. Tolbert can carry the load rushing, contribute in the passing game and play on third downs in pass protection.

If the Chargers don't make a serious run at him, Tolbert could be the missing piece for one of the NFL's better offenses. While Tolbert isn't a prototypical No. 1 back, he does so many things well that several teams should be interested.

3. Michael Bush, Raiders

It's looking more and more likely that the Raiders will do everything in their power to retain Bush for 2012. Whether that's a new contract or the franchise tag is yet to be seen, but Oakland won't let Bush go without a fight.

There will be outside interest in Bush after he showed in Darren McFadden's absence that he can be a team's No. 1 back. With the Raiders likely to remain a run-heavy bunch next season, keeping Bush will be important in that equation. Could another team offer him more money and a better opportunity, however?

4. Peyton Hillis, Browns

The Madden cover boy had the kind of nightmare 2011 season that gracing the cover of that video game usually forecasts. However, this went much deeper than being on the Madden cover. Hillis was injured, concerned with a new contract and disillusioned in his own locker room.

At this point, there's no doubt that he needs a fresh start. If he can get a manageable contract in a new city, Hillis can make an impact as a bruising back.

5. Benjarvus Green-Ellis, Patriots

The most interesting name (and nickname) in football also has a skill set that could help several teams. As the Patriots' lead back for the past two seasons, Green-Ellis has 24 rushing touchdowns and over 1,600 yards.

And at just 26 years old with just over 500 career carries, Green-Ellis still has thread left on the tires. He should have a couple more productive seasons, whether it's in New England or elsewhere.

Others: Cedric Benson (CIN), Ryan Grant (GB)
