Notre Dame Recruiting 2012: Should Irish Fans Worry About Deontay Greenberry?

Danny FlynnJun 5, 2018

One of the top-rated prospects of Notre Dame’s 2012 recruiting class, WR Deontay Greenberry, has been committed to the Irish since last spring. Since the day he announced his decision he has never wavered, even though Pac-12 schools like USC, Arizona State and others have all gone after the 4-star recruit.

The California native has always stood firm in his commitment to Brian Kelly and the Irish and with National Signing Day approaching, most Notre Dame fans feel comfortable that he’s practically guaranteed to end up in South Bend next season.

Still, their anxiety level had to go up just a little bit when word broke that Greenberry would be taking one last visit down to Houston this past weekend, just a few days before National Signing Day.

This trip comes after Greenberry previously canceled a scheduled visit to UCLA a few weeks ago.

The question is, does this sudden interest in other schools signal some cause for concern?

The answer? No, probably not.

Many recruits like to use up as many visits as they can, even if they’ve already committed to a school.

Would you turn down an all-expenses paid weekend to a nice college campus, where you’ll get wined and dined by college football coaches?

I wouldn’t, you wouldn’t and very few 18-year-old high school athletes with some free time would either.

Recently, Notre Dame has been both the beneficiary and the victim of highly-touted prospects de-committing, as top quarterback prospect Gunner Kiel surprisingly reneged on a commitment he had made to LSU to enroll at South Bend, while top cornerback prospect Ronald Darby spurned the Irish by opening his recruitment back up just a few weeks ago.

From all indications, though, it doesn’t seem like Irish fans will have to fear Greenberry pulling a shocker and de-committing this late in the process.

The prospect of playing with Kiel in Brian Kelly’s spread offense for the next few years and the idea of going to the same school as his cousin, CB Tee Shepard, who is already enrolled in class at Notre Dame, should be enough to get Greenberry to come to South Bend.

Stranger things have happened, especially on National Signing Day, but at this point, it doesn’t seem like Notre Dame fans should have too much to worry about when it comes to Deontay Greenberry, as he looks destined to be wearing an Irish uniform in 2012.
