Ohio State Recruiting: Armani Reeves Commitment Sign of Urban Meyer's Power
Urban Meyer is back with a vengeance, and the rest of the Big Ten should be shaking in their cleats.
The latest example of the star coach's amazing recruiting power was receiving a commitment from Armani Reeves, who had more than a dozen schools competing for his services according to Rivals.
Reeves was previously committed to Penn State, but he decided to reassess his options after all the problems the Nittany Lions went through following the Jerry Sandusky scandal.
After a season of turmoil, Meyer has solidified the team's previously rock-solid foundation once again. Instead of being a fallback option, Ohio State has regained its spot as a place that players want to go as a stepping stone for their football careers.
The fact Meyer and his coaching staff were able to sneak in and snag Reeves is a testament to how important a head coach is to a program. Prestige is nice, but there needs to be a big name to back it up for the history to matter to an NFL-hopeful recruit.
Reeves is just the latest example of the Buckeyes getting back on track. They have already received 24 commitments, including 5-star studs Noah Spence and Adolphus Washington. Not too shabby for a team that finished 6-7 in 2011.
There were no shortage of questions about Meyer's ability to match his success at Florida when he took the Ohio State job. It's certainly a high standard to live up to, but he's off to a terrific start.
Recruiting is a major part of building a program, and Meyer clearly hasn't missed a beat in that area. If the first-year results match his offseason efforts, elite prospects will be lining up for a chance to put on the scarlet and grey.
The fact he's been able to make that much progress in such a short time is quite amazing. It's almost as if he never left college football in the first place.
Signing Reeves is just a minor glimpse of what's to come in Columbus. It's the beginning of something special that Meyer is already building at Ohio State.
