National Signing Day 2012: Ranking the Top 10 Classes on the Eve of NSD

Randy ChambersJun 7, 2018

The time is almost here where nearly every top uncommitted player makes a decision that will impact the rest of his life.

National signing day is just a couple of days away, and teams' and players' futures will change forever. Where will some of the top players in the country end up, and which teams will fill their needs with future stars?

Those questions have yet to be answered, but we do know where some of these teams rank already, as there are quite a few players that have already made their decisions.

Of course, things will change in a couple of days, but as we are quickly approaching national signing day, here is how the top 10 classes look right now.

10. UCLA

1 of 10

5-Star Recruits: One

4-Star Recruits: Six

3-Star Recruits: 15

How in the world is first-year head coach Jim Mora recruiting this well, especially when he has almost no college coaching experience at all? Who knows, but we do know he has some solid players heading into his first season. Quarterback Devin Fuller, defensive tackle Ellis McCarthy and cornerback Ishmael Adams will be the key players in this class.

If Mora can get production of out of his players and put up results, things could change quickly for the Bruins moving forward.

9. Texas A&M

2 of 10

5-Star Recruits: One

4-Star Recruits: Six

3-Star Recruits: 16

Texas A&M picks up a new head coach in Kevin Sumlin and picks up a solid recruiting class as well.

Starting with running back Trey Williams, he has the potential to become the starter from day one for the Aggies. Quarterback Matt Davis will likely become the future of this team, as he's a leader and has the ability to kill you with his legs.

Other notable players include Corey Thompson, Bralon Addison, Germain Ifedi and De'Vante Harris.

As Texas A&M heads into the SEC, it has the talent to compete with the big boys.

8. South Carolina

3 of 10

5-Star Recruits: One

4-Star Recruits: Seven

3-Star Recruits: 15

With wide receiver Alshon Jeffery heading to the NFL draft, the Gamecocks were able to replace him with 5-star receiver Shaq Roland. Wide receiver Kwinton Smith isn't a bad addition either. It's also nice to pick up a top running back prospect like Mike Davis.

On the defensive side of the ball, players like Jordan Diggs and Kaiwan Lewis are worth mentioning.

With the talent coming in and the talent returning, South Carolina is a team to worry about in the SEC.

7. Miami

4 of 10

5-Star Recruits: One

4-Star Recruits: Eight

3-Star Recruits: 19

Miami doesn't have many 5-star players, but it does have one of the deepest classes in the country with 32 commitments. The prized player in this class is running back Duke Johnson, who has great acceleration and with great hands can even line up as a receiver.

The Hurricanes have picked up a total of three quarterbacks, six wide receivers and five cornerbacks.

I think this team is set for the next few years.

6. Florida State

5 of 10

5-Star Recruits: Four

4-Star Recruits: Six

3-Star Recruits: Four

Florida State may not have as many commitments as a lot of these other schools do, but the players they do have are extremely talented, starting with defensive end Mario Edwards and quarterback Jameis Winston, although Winston is also considering Stanford.

Both of those players have the ability to be game-changers on their respective side of the ball. Other great players include Mario Pender and Chris Casher.

The Seminoles are also likely to move up with several players still considering them heading into national signing day.

5. Michigan

6 of 10

5-Star Recruits: Two

4-Star Recruits: 12

3-Star Recruits: Eight

This class may lack the flashy players, but it includes solid players at the positions you need to win football games, starting with offensive linemen Kyle Kalis and Erik Magnuson. Then you have your physical and athletic linebackers in Royce Jenkins-Stone, Joe Bolden and James Ross.

This class doesn't have a top wide receiver, star quarterback or speedster running back. But it's a solid class and will provide depth at the needed positions to be successful.

4. Florida

7 of 10

5-Star Recruits: Three

4-Star Recruits: 10

3-Star Recruits: Eight

Will Muschamp is doing extremely well in his second season and is raking in the top players. On offense, they've landed two top tight ends in Kent Taylor and Colin Thompson.

But this class is loaded on the defensive side of the ball with top cornerback Brian Poole, defensive end Jonathan Bullard and safety Marcus Maye committing to Florida.

Let's not forget that the Gators are also in the running for players such as Stefon Diggs, Tracy Howard and Leonard Williams. Don't be surprised if this class is No. 1 when it's all said and done.

3. Ohio State

8 of 10

5-Star Recruits: Three

4-Star Recruits: 12

3-Star Recruits: 10

We knew Urban Meyer was a great recruiter, but nobody expected him to land as many top players as quickly as he did. This defensive line is going to be incredible with Noah Spence, Se'Von Pittman, Tommy Schutt and Adolphus Washington, not to mention the addition of a powerful runner in Brionte Dunn on the offensive side of the ball as well.

The Buckeyes may be banned from a bowl game next season, but expect them to be competing for BCS national championships starting in 2013.

2. Texas

9 of 10

5-Star Recruits: Four

4-Star Recruits: 12

3-Star Recruits: Six

It seems like the Longhorns have top players at nearly every position on both sides of the ball. They have the best defensive tackle in Malcolm Brown, a top running back in Jonathan Gray, a top wide receiver in Cayleb Jones and the list goes on and on.

Nobody has ever questioned Mack Brown and his recruiting record, but now he has to start putting up results with the talent he's bringing in.

1. Alabama

10 of 10

5-Star Recruits: Three

4-Star Recruits: 12

3-Star Recruits: 12

Is it really fair for a team that's already competing for national championships and won the most recent one, to be recruiting like this? How do you replace several key departing members of your defense?

Just land the top linebacker in this year's class in Reggie Ragland and two of the top safeties in Landon Collins and Eddie Williams. Offensively, they picked up a speedster wide receiver in Cyrus Jones and a complete running back in T.J. Yeldon.

For those that want to see the SEC have a down year, it's really difficult when they're recruiting like this.
