2012 NFL Free Agents: Top 5 WRs Available This Offseason

Zach KruseJun 7, 2018

The following are the top five wide receivers available during the 2012 NFL free agency period:

1. Wes Welker, Patriots

Welker tops this list, but it's almost inconceivable to think that New England will let him get away. He's far too important to the Patriots offense, and I can't see Welker walking away for more money. Still, if we're making this list, he has to be No. 1. The NFL's premier slot receiver, Welker has four seasons of 100 or more receptions. He'll be 31 next season, but there's still productive years in Welker's legs.

2. Vincent Jackson, Chargers

Save for last season's contract dispute that cost him 11 games, Jackson has been among the NFL's more productive receivers over the last four years. In his three full seasons, Jackson went over 1,000 yards and had a yards-per-reception average of over 17. Given his broken relationship with the Chargers and inconsistencies that occasionally show up on the field, Jackson will likely be allowed to test the free agent waters.

3. Dwayne Bowe, Chiefs

A year after catching 15 touchdowns, Bowe had just five in 2011. It looks likely that Bowe's 2010 season was nothing more than a statistical anomaly, as he hasn't cracked more than seven touchdowns in any of his four other seasons. However, Bowe is a big-bodied receiver who can win on each level and on a variety of routes. If he had more consistent quarterback play, Bowe could get back in the double digits in touchdowns.

4. Marques Colston, Saints

A former seventh-round pick, Colston has turned himself into one of the NFL's top receivers. It certainly doesn't hurt that he's played with Drew Brees his entire career, but this is a guy who's played in 14 or more games five of six years and has over 6,000 career yards. Even with lesser quarterback play, Colston could be an impact player.

5. DeSean Jackson, Eagles

What are we to make of Jackson? He's one of the NFL's more unique talents, but his attitude can turn a good locker room sour in a hurry. You'd have to think there will be teams who play down some of the attitude issues, especially given his ability to make plays on offense and special teams. No one would be surprised if Jackson left Philadelphia at the right price.
