National Signing Day 2012: Breaking Down the Biggest Weekend Commitments
With just a few days left before National Signing Day, college football fans around the country are all waiting with eager anticipation to see which top recruits their favorite schools will land this year.
There are still plenty of highly rated, uncommitted players lurking out there, and there are definitely going to be some major surprises on Wednesday.
Some players, however, didn't feel the need to wait until Feb. 1 to announce their future intentions, as there were a few key commitments made over the weekend.
Here's a look at five prospects who announced their college decisions this past weekend.
DE Arik Armstead Commits to Oregon
1 of 5DE Arik Armstead may be one of the most talented recruits of the 2012 class, but he's also one of the most mysterious, as nobody was able to figure out what his intentions were after he decommitted from USC last October.
Cal, Notre Dame and Auburn were all thought to be very realistic options for the California native, but instead, he's chosen to play his college ball for Pac-12 powerhouse Oregon, ESPN.com reported.
Armstead will have the chance to play early in Eugene opposite standout end Dion Jordan, and it will be interesting to see what type of impact he has for the Ducks in 2012, as they look to defend their conference championship.
QB Devin Fuller Commits to UCLA
2 of 5Many around the Pac-12 openly questioned and criticized UCLA's hiring of Jim Mora Jr., but the new Bruins coach is certainly doing his best to shut his naysayers up, as he managed to pick up a commitment from another highly touted prospect this weekend.
After landing coveted 4-star recruits like DT Ellis McCarthy and LB Jeremy Castro, Mora added quite possibly UCLA's biggest pickup yet on Sunday, when 4-star QB Devin Fuller out of Old Tappan, N.J. committed to the Bruins.
Fuller is one of the most athletic and explosive players available this year, and if he continues to develop as a passer, it wouldn't be shocking to see him beat out Brett Hundley to be UCLA's quarterback of the future.
Mora isn't just assembling one of the best classes in the Pac-12, he's building one of the best classes in the country, and with Fuller now on board, the Bruins could end up finishing with a Top-10 ranked class when it's all said and done.
RB D.J. Foster Commits to Arizona State
3 of 5Todd Graham's first recruiting class at Arizona State isn't exactly loaded with big-name players, but there is one highly rated prospect that the new coach can brag about this year, and that's speedy running back D.J. Foster.
Foster, who played his high school ball down the road at Saguaro High School in Scottsdale, is rated as a 4-star recruit by both Scout and Rivals, and he spurned offers from every other major Pac-12 school to play for the Sun Devils, according to arizonasports.com.
Foster is the type of dangerous offensive weapon who could flourish in Graham's system, and he's the type of standout recruit that will be the face of Arizona State's 2012 class.
LB Dalton Santos Commits to Texas
4 of 5It may have taken a while for LB Dalton Santos to receive a scholarship offer from Texas, but once his dream school finally sent him an offer, it didn't take long for him to commit, according to statesman.com.
Santos, who played for Van high school in Texas, grew up a Longhorns fan, and he'll now get the chance to live his dream and play for his favorite school.
The 6'2'', 240-pound 4-star recruit is considered one of the top inside linebacker prospects in the country, and he should be a strong run-stopper for Manny Diaz's defense in the years to come.
DT Harold Brantley Commits to Missouri
5 of 5DT Harold Brantley, a 3-star recruit, isn't exactly going to get Missouri fans as thrilled as a commitment from star WR Dorial Green-Beckham would, but Brantley is a valuable pickup for the Tigers nonetheless.
The Hershey, Pennsylvania native is a strong, athletic 6'3'', 280-pound tackle who gives Missouri some quality depth in the defensive interior, something that the Tigers are going to need a lot of now that they're making the move to the SEC.
Brantley was originally committed to Syracuse, but after taking a trip to Columbia a few days ago, he must have liked what he saw enough to switch his pledge to the Tigers, according to scout.com.
