NBA Rumors: Steve Nash Would Make New York Knicks Instant Championship Threats
Could Steve Nash be taking the court as a member of the New York Knicks next season?
The 2011-2012 NBA season just began not long ago, and already the 2012 free-agency talks are underway. According to the New York Post, the Knicks will target Nash in the 2012 offseason in hopes of taking this talented team to an NBA championship.
It would be a storybook ending for the career of Nash and a perfect fit for a Knicks team that lacks discipline and production at the point guard position.
Nash once played under head coach Mike D'Antoni in Phoenix during his five-year coaching tenure with the Suns before switching to the Knicks.
Ending his career under the coaching of D'Antoni would be a pleasant, comfortable way for Nash to finish his NBA tenure, as he is well acquainted with the way D'Antoni runs the show and knows his style of play well. It would also give him a legitimate shot at an NBA championship.
Nash also played alongside Knicks power forward Amar'e Stoudemire in Phoenix, helping Stoudemire's game mature in a big way with the pick-and-roll game.
There is no question Stoudemire would entertain the idea of playing with the very point guard that took his game to a league-elite level. In his last year with Nash in the 2009-2010 season, Stoudemire was posting 23.1 points and 8.9 rebounds per game.
Adding arguably the league's best scorer in Carmelo Anthony to the picture, as well as the vigorous defense of Tyson Chandler, and suddenly these Knicks become NBA championship threats.
The Knicks are a team that struggles to put forth fluid offensive performances, as the offense they run is an isolation-based, stagnant sort of half-court set. The team averaged just 18.6 assists per game, a mark that ranks No. 25 in the league.
Nash not only helps alleviate this problem, but may in fact terminate it entirely. He has the ability to dish out dimes regularly and would continue to do so playing around easily the most talent he has had in his entire career.
Sporting a blue and white uniform in New York next season would be a sad day for Phoenix Suns fans, yet a glorious one for a 7-13 New York Knicks team that looks to have a worrisome season ahead of it.
A storybook move for Stoudemire, D'Antoni, Nash and the Knicks would make for a positive one and could well be one that is entertained this offseason.
The one key missing on the Knicks this season has been Nash.
