UFC on Fox 2: Rashad Evans Will Be Rewarded for Win with a KO by Jon Jones
The bright light of glory that Rashad Evans is seeing will soon be transformed to the blackness on the inside of his eyelids.
Evans won a unanimous four-round decision over the previously undefeated Phil Davis on Saturday night. The win serves to further validate his No. 1 contender status, and locks in an upcoming fight for Evans with champion Jon Jones.
The Win
Evans had little trouble with the elite wrestler, but overall raw fighter, Davis. In the early stages, Davis looked good with his kicks and was actually superior in the stand-up game. Then Evans got his timing down.
Evans began checking the kicks and taking control of the match, and the rest was a cake walk.
Rashad moved better than he ever has in this fight. He was more fluid and efficient. That was a good thing because this was the first time he ever was force to go past the third round of a fight.
Date with Jon Jones
Jones himself erased almost all doubt about who Evans would fight should he win. Jones, who was working on the Fox telecast, told Jeff Wagenheim of SI.com prior to the fight:
"As most people already know, there's been a lot of hype, a lot of drama surrounding me and Rashad Evans, being former teammates. So I'm really hoping and praying he wins this fight tonight, so I can get past this chapter in my story.
"
UFC commentator Jon Asik lets us in on the supposed date of this fight.
Doomed Matchup
Evans can't beat Jones. Bones will be able to keep him at a distance in the stand-up game. He has a longer reach and is a superior boxer.
He also moves extremely well. This means Evans is not going to be able to get inside on Jones and utilize the one advantage he will have, which is wrestling.
And even that advantage is not much of an advantage at all. Jones can grapple, and he certainly knows how to end a fight in a submission, which is exactly how this one will end.
Bones will pound on Evans as the two box. He will then get him on the mat and finish him.
