Jim Tressel: Going Back to School Would Waste Fallen Coach's Time

David DanielsJun 7, 2018

Jim Tressel needs to be showered with a cooler filled with ice-cold Gatorade.

The Indianapolis Colts assistant and former Ohio State Buckeyes head coach needs to wake up.  Tressel is one of the most respected coaches in the game of football and needs to snap out of it and stick with his true passion.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported on Sunday that the teacher at heart was interested in returning not to the gridiron, but the educational field tweeting:

For Tressel, going back to school would be an equally bad decision as if he called the offense off the field and sent out the special teams unit to punt on second down.

After not getting promoted by the Colts, Tressel is most likely, and understandably, frustrated.  But leaving the game of football isn’t the right decision.

Can you say midlife crisis?

Tressel’s calling is to coach football.  He is one of the most successful college coaches in the past decade.  Finding a job would be absolutely effortless; if Mike Leach and Rich Rodriguez can get leadership positions, then Tressel can without a doubt.  But apparently he isn’t looking in the right places.

He was meant to lead, motivate, recruit and call plays for a football squad.  Tressel didn’t develop a name from helping students with financial aid or directing student activities.  Such a career change is ludicrous.

Almost a year ago now, Tressel’s peace was disturbed as the NCAA brought the hammer down after Terrelle Pryor and friends got tatted up.  Forget school, though, Tressel needs to get over it and get back to being a head coach, not a college administrator.

At 59 years old, Tressel is too young and too wise to hang up the sweater vest.  He needs to return to an NFL or D1 football locker room, not leave his sanctuary for a couple books.
