Senior Bowl 2012: Grading All 5 Boise State Broncos

Martin SondermannJan 29, 2012

The Senior Bowl is a time when players from all over the nation come together to compare and contrast their skill sets against other elite college football players.

Every year it seems there are a handful of surprises. Some players play above the expectations placed on them, while others fail to meet the standard that is expected.

The Boise State Broncos sent a record number of players to this year's Senior Bowl. In total, five players: Billy Winn, George Iloka, Shea McClellin, Doug Martin and Kellen Moore.

Did the Broncos' five live up to expectations?

Let's take a look.

George Iloka

1 of 5

George Iloka got a considerable amount of playing time on Saturday. However, not much came his way during the game.

Part of the problem Saturday was that Iloka was playing deep nearly every play. This was something that the coaches had obviously designed, and it kept Iloka from having a stand-out performance. Of course, you don't expect creative blitzing and coverages in a Senior Bowl.

In saying that, it was still a solid outing for the Broncos Safety. He had a solid week of practice, and the game did nothing to take away from his draft stock.

During the game, No. 8, in this case 18, could be seen darting around the field, near every play that went more than 10 yards. He did his job, and he did it well.

Overall Grade: Solid B

Billy Winn

2 of 5

Billy Winn was another Broncos player who got his minutes. If you watched the game, it seemed like he was always in.

In fact, Iloka, Shea McClellin and Winn spent a lot of time out on the field Saturday.

You can be certain that all three of them were instrumental in the dominating defensive performance by the North team.

Winn had a handful of outstanding moments during the game, and the rest of the time he played consistent.

Overall Grade: Solid B

Shea McClellin

3 of 5

No Boise State player did more to help his draft stock Saturday than Shea McClellin. This on the heels of a solid week of practice that got scouts talking about his versatility.

Most reports say that Shea will probably land as a linebacker in the NFL. He played defensive end for the Broncos, but his size, strength and abilities make him better suited as an outside linebacker at the next level.

Saturday, McClellin proved he was up for the challenge. He was everywhere, and it seemed like he was extremely comfortable in the mix.

Look for his draft stock to go up after this outing. Don't be surprised if he gets picked third or fourth round.

Doug Martin

4 of 5

Outstanding Boise State running back Doug Martin simply confirmed what everyone was already saying about him.

He is versatile, a team player, strong and plays every down. Saturday, Martin showed that ability to do anything asked of him.

He returned kicks, ran the ball, ran pass patterns and blocked extremely well. In fact, it was Martin who was responsible for key blocks on several key plays, including a touchdown.

He only confirmed his rising stock, and expect Martin to go as early as the second round come draft time.

Overall Grade: B+

Kellen Moore

5 of 5

Kellen Moore had two touchdown passes Saturday, but you won't find that in the official stats of the game. Why, you might ask?

Well, because both of those well-thrown balls were dropped by his receivers on back-to-back plays.

Overall, Moore played well. It started a bit rocky for him, but as the game went on, the Moore we are all used to began to shine.

In fact, it was Moore who drove his team down the field to clinch the game for the North. It is too bad that the North coaches went for a field goal instead of a touchdown on that last drive, because Moore deserved the chance.

If you watched the game, you saw Moore's leadership abilities. A couple of times the North players were out of position, and Moore had to direct them into place before the snap.

He also had one incredible throw to his fullback that was placed so well it could have only be caught by his guy. Most people thought it was an incompletion until realizing Moore had threaded the needle.

Did he help his draft stock Saturday? Maybe not, but he certainly didn't hurt it.

Overall Grade: B
