Denis Boytsov KOs Another Nobody: Could Fight Kubrat Pulev Next

Will ProtheroeJan 29, 2012

Denis Boytsov notched up another utterly pointless win yesterday after beating Darnell Wilson to take his record to (30-0-0, 25 KOs).

The Russian took a little while to get going against Wilson, whose record now stands at (24-13-3, 20 KOs).

Wilson proved more elusive than was expected and threw a couple of good shots, but failed to daunt Boytsov.

Once he found the range on his jab in the third, it was only a matter of time before Wilson went down.

A straight right to Wilson's head put the result beyond doubt in the fourth round. Wilson slumped against the ropes and was unable to beat the count.

This creates the possibility of the first interesting matchup in Boytsov's six-and-a-half year long career.

Reports suggest that Boytsov may challenge Bulgarian amateur standout Kubrat Pulev.

Pulev's professional career to date stands as a polar opposite to that of Boytsov.

Turning professional at a relatively late 27, Pulev (ranked 10th in The Ring's heavyweight rankings)  perhaps felt the pressure to advance faster than Boytsov (still only 25) has had to.

In only his fifth professional fight, he took on Britain's Matt Skelton. Just a year before, Skelton had been challenging Ruslan Chagaev for his WBA title.

Since then, Pulev has taken on and beaten some established names such as Michael Sprott and Derric Rossy.

The only recognizable name on Boytsov's record is Vinny Maddalone.

Pulev has also made a concerted effort to fight boxers that present different challenges.

Back in 2010, he took on the 6'9", 316 pounder from Russia, Evgeny Orlov.

Orlov looked to control the fight and bully Pulev. The Bulgarian kept his head and wouldn't be drawn into a brawl, frustrating Orlov until the big man got himself disqualified.

Pulev doesn't have the knockout power that Boytsov does, and would have to box smart to beat him. Boytsov hasn't faced anyone with the elusiveness of Pulev, though.

His long spell of easy fights may have made him complacent; he hasn't made any noticeable improvement in years.

If the fight happens, it would be the making of both men and could be a great fight to watch, something we rarely get to see at heavyweight.

Meanwhile on the same card, former champ Ruslan Chagaev bounced back from his loss to Alexander Povetkin by beating Trinidad's Kertson Manswell by a wide margin on the scorecards.
