UFC on Fox 2 Results: What We Learned from Mike Russow vs. Jon Olav Einemo
It wasn't the prettiest win, but a W is a W for Mike Russow. The Chicago cop put on a show for the hometown crowd and took out grappling ace Jon Olav Enemo via unanimous decision.
The opening frame saw Russow push forward in order to secure a takedown. He ate a few strikes standing but controlled the action throughout the round. A late sweep to full-mount by Einemo was eliminated by the buzzer going off to signal the end of the round.
Russow did most of his work in the second frame. Russow got a takedown and kept Einemo on the mat for the majority of the round. Russow worked some elbows to his opponent and stayed active enough to present a standup.
Per the norm, the third round in a heavyweight bout was fairly uneventful. Russow was able to avoid the submission attempts by Einemo and durable enough to survive some big shots landed by the Golden Glory fighter.
The fight proved that Russow is as durable as they come (not that we didn't already know that from the Todd Duffee fight). It also showed Russow's ability to avoid legitimate submission attempts and use his top control to wear on opponents.
The win likely won't shoot Russow up the rankings but he did enough to win and should face some higher level talent for his next bout.
Einemo meanwhile has lost two fights in a row and could possibly be on his way out of the UFC. Einemo's grappling credentials combined with his fight of the night performance against Dave Herman may be the saving grace following this loss.
He was tired after the second round and was unable to capitalize on some of the power shots he landed. We know Dana White isn't a big fan of Golden Glory, but I believe Einemo deserves at least one more shot in the Octagon.
