UFC on FOX 2: Which Fighters Have the Most to Lose?

Matt JuulJun 7, 2018

With three exciting matchups kicking off the UFC's second official televised card on FOX, the stakes couldn't be higher as two possible title shots hang in the balance.

In one corner, former champion Rashad Evans is looking to finally receive his chance to reclaim the light heavyweight title, a feat that has slipped his grasp on numerous occasions over the past two years. Plagued by injuries, a now fully healthy—and hungry—"Suga" will look to extend his winning streak to four in a row, having not lost since losing the crown to Lyoto Machida in 2009.

The self-proclaimed middleweight champion, Chael Sonnen, sits in another corner, hopeful to redeem his last-second loss to the actual champion, Anderson Silva, by taking out fellow trash-talking fiend Michael Bisping in order to earn a rematch.  Although the war of words has been toned down to a minimum, this may be because Uncle Chael is preoccupied with his previous foe.

Now, losing out on a title bid would be absolutely devastating to any mixed martial artist, but with the baggage these two fighters have been carrying, the weight would be that much heavier to bear.  Out of all the fighters on the card, both Sonnen and Evans have the most to lose if they are not victorious at tonight's event.

Sonnen can talk all he wants about how he is the supposed "real" champion, but the fact remains—he tapped.  Losing out to Bisping would thwart his chance to finally get revenge against Silva and will dash his hopes of ever getting actual UFC gold.

As for Evans, he's in even more of a bind.

Prior to Jon Jones even becoming champion, Evans was promised a title shot against a recovering Shogun Rua.  But when the time came for these two top 205-pounders to face each other, injury forced Evans to drop out of the bout, leading to the rise of the Jon Jones era.

Add in the bad blood shared by Jones and Evans and it becomes clear that there is a lot on the line for the former champion.

A loss would be a major setback and would decimate Evans' longtime title hopes.  Even his opponent Phil Davis realizes that it's Evans fight to lose.  By calling him the No. 1 contender, Davis knows that his role in this fight is to play the spoiler and once again postpone the Jones vs. Evans grudge match.

Sonnen and Evans realize that this is the "make it or break it" moment.  Very few people receive title shots and even less receive two.  It is up to these two top fighters to take destiny into their own hands or else lose out on an opportunity of a lifetime.
