National Signing Day 2012: Which College Football Powers Will Win Big?
National Signing Day 2012 is less than a week away, yet there are still scores of blue-chip high school recruits who've yet to decide where they'll play their college football.
While some high profile programs (i.e. Alabama, Texas, Miami) have already filled out their incoming classes, more or less, a number of other BCS hopefuls, including these three, still have room for more youngsters and figure to make the most of it on February 1st.
Florida State
Jimbo Fisher's Seminoles fell short of expectations on the football field this past season, but don't expect that disappointment to carry onto the recruiting trail.
Fisher's already locked down commitments from 16 kids, seven of whom are listed among the Top 100 prospects by Scout.com and four of whom tote 5-star ratings.
Jameis Winston, the No. 2 quarterback in the nation and a US Army All-American, is currently considered a soft verbal commit to Florida State and is expected to sign on the dotted line for the 'Noles on Wednesday. He may well be joined by a host of other as-yet-undecided 5-stars, including defensive linemen Mario Edwards and Eddie Goldman and defensive backs Ronald Darby and Tracy Howard.
If Fisher's staff comes through, FSU's class figures to jump from the 13th-best in college football into the top 10, if not the top five.
Auburn
Nick Saban has practically wrapped up his Tuscaloosa-bound haul, leaving Auburn head coach Gene Chizik to clean up the "scraps".
And what quality "scraps" they are.
The Tigers are hoping to be the last ones to tango with a pair of 5-stars—wide receiver Stefon Diggs and offensive tackle Avery Young—along with a host of 4-star talents, including linebacker Kwon Alexander, defensive end Leonard Williams and wide-out Jaquay Williams.
So while Chizik's 20th-ranked class may not seem like much now, it could easily swell into a top-10 caliber group within a matter of days.
Oregon
Chip Kelly isn't leaving, and boy, are the Ducks happy about that. Now, rather than having to scramble just to keep their No. 18 class together, Oregon's coaches can focus their collective energy on luring some big-name recruits to Eugene.
Atop the list is Arik Armstead, the top-rated offensive lineman among the high school ranks. Armstead was expected to end up at Cal.
That is, until ace recruiter Tosh Lupoi took his talents to Washington. With Lupoi out of the mix in the Bay Area, Kelly might also pounce on 5-star safety Shaq Thompson.
Four-star wide receiver Thomas Johnson is also expected to make his way to the Pacific Northwest.
Landing those guys (and a few more) will do wonders to soften the blow of losing LaMichael James and Darron Thomas in the same offseason.
