What Are Florida State's Chances of Pairing Mario Edwards with Eddie Goldman?
With star defensive end Brandon Jenkins set to return for his senior season, it now appears that Florida State’s defensive line is shaping up to be one of the strongest and most dominant units in the country for the 2012 season.
Jenkins will once again join three of the ACC’s top defensive linemen—defensive end Bjoern Werner and defensive tackles Everett Dawkins and Tim Jernigan—along with key contributors like defensive end Cornelius Carradine and defensive tackle Anthony McCloud, to form one of the strongest defensive front fours in college football.
With all of that talent in the trenches, it’s hard to say that the Seminoles actually need some more reinforcements to throw into the mix, but any time you have the chance to land two of the premier recruits in the country, you’ve got to jump on it.
And that’s just what Jimbo Fisher has done, as he’s already reeled in a commitment from the top defensive end prospect of the 2012 class, Mario Edwards, a blue-chip 5-star recruit out of Texas. Fisher has also made a huge impression on the top defensive tackle available, DT Eddie Goldman out of Washington D.C.
The thought of pairing two top-notch talents like Goldman and Edwards together on Florida State’s defensive line for the next three or four years is certainly a scary idea indeed.
The question is, though, will it actually become a reality?
From all indications, Edwards is firm on his commitment to the Seminoles, and he’s expected to sign a letter of intent on National Signing Day. But it’s still a wait and see approach with Goldman, as he’s reportedly down to three choices—Alabama, Auburn and Florida State.
The mighty 6’4’’, 315-pound defensive tackle already looks like he’s physically ready to handle himself against some of the best offensive linemen that college football has to offer. He’s the type of physical specimen that could make an instant impact in Tallahassee, just like Tim Jernigan did this past season.
Whether Goldman ultimately ends up joining Edwards and the current defensive line crew at Florida State or not, you have to give a ton of credit to head coach Jimbo Fisher and his assistants for their efforts on the recruiting trail this year. The Seminoles are once again primed to bring in one of the most decorated recruiting classes in the country.
If Goldman joins the party and commits to the Seminoles, there’s a chance that the 5-star recruit could rocket Florida State all way up to the top of the class rankings.
Adding Edwards and possibly Goldman to a defensive line that already looks like it's going to be one of the best, if not the best, in college football next season almost doesn't seem fair. But that type of talent infusion could be just what the Seminoles need to get them over the hump in the ACC in 2012.
