National Signing Day Predictions: Bold Picks for Top 3 Unsigned Recruits
The 2012 recruiting circus is winding down to its inevitable end, as National Signing Day is mere days away.
There are a lot of top-shelf recruits out there who still haven't made up their minds about where they want to play college ball, and that's understandable. To say that there's a lot of pressure on these guys to pick the "right" school would be an understatement.
As for where the absolute best of the best are going to be playing their college ball, I'm afraid I have no idea. I don't have any inside information, nor do I have a functioning crystal ball (the one I do have sucks).
However, I do have some bold predictions for the top three remaining prospects. Let's take a look.
Note: this is the top three according to Rivals.com, and Stefon Diggs is left off because his decision is going to be announced after NSD.
Dorial Green-Beckham, WR (Springfield, MO)
Considering: Alabama, Arkansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, Texas, according to Rivals.
The general consensus among the recruiting punditry is that Dorial Green-Beckham is going to take his talents to Arkansas, a team that could use a stud wide receiver.
I'm going to go with Arkansas, too. Fayetteville is a mere stone's throw from Green-Beckham's hometown of Springfield, and he would have the opportunity to start right away with the Razorbacks.
Green-Beckham would have that same opportunity at other schools, but starting with the Razorbacks would be a little different. They run a pass-heavy offense and are led by a very good quarterback in Tyler Wilson. Green-Beckham could immediately step in and be his go-to guy.
Green-Beckham really can't go wrong with any of the schools on his list, but Arkansas is the best choice. The Razorbacks can offer him things other schools can't, plain and simple.
Eddie Goldman, DT (Washington, D.C.)
Considering: Alabama, Auburn, Florida State, according to the Washington Post.
You get the sense that Alabama and Florida State are the two favorites here (not saying they are), and it's going to be very, very hard for Goldman to pass up the opportunity to go join Nick Saban inTuscaloosa.
But I'm going to go with Florida State. Saban had a great team in 2011 and will have another great team in 2012 (and 2013, 2014, etc.), but Jimbo Fisher has a very good team that has the potential to be great.
I won't ignore the fact that the Seminoles fell well short of their ultimate goal in 2011, but it wasn't the defense's fault. Florida State was one of the best defensive teams in the country, and they have a lot of key players coming back in 2012.
If Goldman chooses Florida State, he'll be joining the mix. The opportunity will be there to contribute right away, and he's a guy who could dominate in the ACC.
Good school, team success, individual success. What more could Goldman ask for?
Darius Hamilton, DE (Ramsey, NJ)
Considering: Rutgers and Florida, according to Rivals.
If Greg Schiano is still at Rutgers, this is an easy call.
But he's not. Schiano agreed to become the new head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Thursday, effectively making this a one-school race.
If Hamilton doesn't decide to go to Florida, it will be a complete shock.
If Hamilton does decide to go to Florida, the rich will be getting richer. The Gators already have one of the best recruiting classes in the nation, and it's particularly heavy on defense. They already have the foundations of an elite defense, and adding Hamilton and others could very well push the needle the rest of the way to elite.
Rutgers will be missing out if Hamilton goes to Florida, but anybody with a gripe can blame Schiano. He chose to leave at an awkward time.
