Senior Bowl 2012: Why Boise State QB Kellen Moore Has an Uphill Battle
According to most reports, Boise State quarterback Kellen Moore has been sharp all week at the 2012 Senior Bowl. On a North team that features Wisconsin's Russell Wilson and Michigan State's Kirk Cousins, Moore has stood out as the best of the three as far as polish and decision-making has gone.
The big problem for Moore is that no matter how well he plays, he won't be able to overcome his lack of size or arm strength. Those two areas will likely bury him on draft day.
Moore is just 5'11" and 195 pounds, and there are questions as to whether or not he can withstand the pounding a he would take over the length of a 16 game schedule. To put it plainly, he is vastly undersized for his position.
Additionally he has a three-quarters release that may sap some of the strength in his arm. His lower release point combined with his lack of height leads to concerns of batted balls. He anticipates routes well, but at the next level he'll need to put more zip on the ball if he wants to complete passes.
What Moore has going for him is his outstanding makeup. The guy has off-the-charts intangibles. By all accounts he absolutely devours football information and was a four-year starter for a Broncos team that was always in the national spotlight.
He was extremely productive over his career and never seemed shaken or overcome by the moment.
Personally I think Moore will end up coaching some day, because regardless of all the positives he brings to the table, he'll never be able to overcome the stigma his height and lack of arm strength will give him.
I do believe he'll end up getting drafted late on day three somewhere around the sixth-round. But a big-time performance at the Senior Bowl could propel him a little higher.
