National Signing Day 2012: Texas Longhorns and Programs That Will Disappoint
National Signing Day is rapidly approaching, and several schools are hoping to land a few more top-notch recruits. Some programs will have great success in the coming weeks, but others won't be as fortunate.
In recent years, the best recruits in the country have liked to wait for the spotlight of National Signing Day or shortly after. This drives coaches nuts because they aren't sure if they'll be landing several recruits or none at all.
Since some of the highest rated recruits plan to announce on or around National Signing Day, coaches and fans sit back and anxiously wait for good news.
Unfortunately for these three teams, they won't be hearing the best of the best call out their names on National Signing Day.
Texas Longhorns
Mack Brown usually always has a phenomenal recruiting class, and this is year no different. What Brown does with them once they get there is a completely different story. Well, at least that's how it's been these past few years.
The long-time Texas coach has landed great players before National Signing Day, and the hope is that he gets more.
Dorial Green-Beckham, the No. 1 player in the country, is his main priority, but it's not very likely that the Longhorns reel him in. Other school's he is interested in are Oklahoma, Missouri and Arkansas, and all of those coaches will spend time with him leading up to Signing Day, according to The Statesman.
Brown will also go after other wideouts, hoping to steal recruits from other schools as well. However, this National Signing Day will not be very kind to the Longhorns. Still, they can enjoy the fact that they already have a strong class.
California Golden Bears
Since recruiting coordinator Tosh Lupoi left the Golden Bears for Washington, Cal lost some recruits.
The Golden Bears were building a very strong class, but the departure of Lupoi has been a major setback, and don't be surprised if Cal loses more recruits.
Shaq Thompson, the No. 1 safety the country, told Tara Turnure of FOX Sports that he is "50-50 between Cal and Washington."
According to Oregon Live, Thompson was tweeting back-and-forth with former Ducks running back LaMichael James.
I do think that Thompson will flip from Cal and pick a different school. In addition to him, guys like Arik Armstead and Aziz Shittu were interested in Cal, but with Lupoi gone it could prevent the Golden Bears from getting these skilled defenders.
LSU Tigers
Since being shutout in the BCS National Championship Game, the LSU Tigers have seen their status in the recruiting rankings drop. They've lose out on some big recruits to other SEC schools, and the Tigers are in dire need of a huge National Signing Day.
However, it isn't likely to happen because there aren't a good number of elite recruits looking at LSU right now.
Those that were looking at LSU have already committed there or elsewhere. The top targets the Tigers will focus on come National Signing Day are cornerback Tracy Howard, linebacker Kwon Alexander and athlete Jeremy Liggins.
With Howard and Alexander also looking at programs like Auburn, Florida, Alabama and Florida State, the Tigers aren't very likely to land either one.
Les Miles needs a big National Singing Day, but he isn't going to get it.
