UFC on Fox 2: 3 Must-See Fights on the Undercard

Alex BallentineJan 25, 2012

The UFC's much-anticipated return to network television features three bouts on the main card that will no doubt be entertaining and make an impact on their respective weight division's title picture.

Lost in the hype of the main card is an interesting undercard featuring rising prospects, fighters with their back to the wall and some UFC newcomers.

While these fights may not hold as much importance to their division's immediate title picture, it's sometimes the fights that mean less that are the most entertaining. Thanks to the UFC's new FOX deal, fans will get to enjoy the vast majority of these fights on the FX channel.

Here are four fights you must tune in early to watch at UFC on FOX 2's undercard.

Joey Beltran vs. Lavar Johnson

1 of 3

Neither of these guys will be fighting for the heavyweight championship anytime soon, in fact, both of these guys are probably on thin ice when it comes to even being on the UFC roster. This won't stop them from putting on a show.

Joey Beltran isn't exactly an elite fighter and has lost three of his last four fights, despite all three of those losses coming to fighters with power Beltran walked through all they had to offer and remained standing. Beltran's granite chin and brawling style make his fights very watchable every time.

Lavar Johnson, the first of the Strikeforce heavyweights to be brought over to the UFC since the announced dissolution of the Strikeforce heavyweight division, is on a two-fight skid that will likely make this fight an audition for his right to have a future in the UFC.

Beltran is the perfect opponent for Johnson as virtually all of his losses have come by submission, and Beltran is not likely to take this fight to the ground.

Two strike-happy heavyweights with granite chins fighting for their jobs? Not something you want to miss.

Charles Oliveira vs. Eric Wisely

2 of 3

While Beltran vs. Johnson may be a three-round, all-out war, this fight could end very quickly.

Charles Oliveira was one of the most exciting lightweight prospects in the UFC, winning his first two fights in dominant fashion overwhelming opponents with his pace and impressive jiu-jitsu skills.

Since that good start, Oliveira has gone on three straight fights without a victory, losing to Jim Miller and Donald Cerrone and fighting Nik Lentz to a no contest after Oliveira landed an illegal knee that set up a rear-naked choke.

Oliveira's bout with Eric Wisely will mark his debut at 145 pounds—a drop in weight that should work out well for Oliveira's tall, lean build.

This fight is must-watch because Oliveira could very well be a force at 145, and he will look to bounce back from his recent losses in a big way.

Jon Olav Einemo vs. Mike Russow

3 of 3

Another clash of heavyweights, Jon Olav Einemo vs. Mike Russow promises to be another entertaining matchup.

Jon Olav Einemo, making his second appearance in the Ocatagon, took home fight of the night honors in his first appearance albeit in a losing effort against Dave "Pee Wee" Herman.

Einemo will look to bring the heat again and entertain the crowd as another loss would in all likelihood put Einemo's job security under serious scrutiny.

Russow, perhaps the award winner for "UFC fighter that looks least like a fighter," is actually an underrated heavyweight with a 14-1 record and a three-fight UFC win streak going for him.

Certainly, he will be looking to finish Einemo early to prove he deserves a step up in competition.

One man with a "fight of the night" under his belt fighting for his job and another fighting for a move up in competition?

Sounds like two titans who will go to war early Saturday evening.
