College Football Recruiting 2012: Which Recruits Are Wavering on Commitments?
Recruits go through the process, make their choice and while some stick to their commitments, others begin to have second thoughts.
What many fail to realize is that when a recruit commits, it's just a verbal agreement until signing day when he can sign his letter of intent.
For this read, I'm going to give you several high-profile prospects that are committed but are clearly wavering. Many of them could choose to stick with their first move, a la Mario Edwards, but some come back out and bolt for another school.
Here we go.
6. Dalton Santos, LB
1 of 6Dalton Santos originally committed to Oklahoma State, then he changed his mind and switched to Tennessee.
All seemed well with his pledge, but when the defensive staff was hit with change in Knoxville, he became iffy.
Now Santos is weighing his options, as a late offer from Texas has him really thinking. Other schools in the mix are Arkansas, Texas A&M and TCU, according to Horns Nation.
5. Dante Fowler, DE
2 of 6Dante Fowler's recruitment has been interesting to say the least.
He pledged to Florida State early during the process but always maintained an interest in Florida. He's taken several trips to Gainesville, and until he faxes his LOI to Jimbo Fisher, he has to be on this list somewhere.
4. Jordan Payton, WR
3 of 6Jordan Payton is another player who's recruitment has been peculiar. He was a one-time USC commit, then he backed out of that.
Payton then seemed ready to commit to Michigan, but he also looked hard at Notre Dame.
Then, all of a sudden, Arizona State came on strong, then a late push from UCLA. But Cal always was the strong contender, and he committed at the Army game.
But DL coach Tosh Lupoi left the Cal staff, and Payton is now seriously thinking of following him to Washington.
3. Bryce Treggs, WR
4 of 6We're in the middle of a running theme here, as Cal's loss of DL coach and top recruiter Tosh Lupoi was a huge blow for them.
After losing 5-star DT Ellis McCarthy to UCLA, now Bryce Treggs is looking hard at the Bruins. Treggs also took a trip to Notre Dame earlier in the fall, so wavering is not foreign to him.
Cal will have to work hard to keep him out of Westwood.
2. Shaq Thompson, S
5 of 6Shaq Thompson dominated at the Army game and chose to re-commit to Cal there as well.
He seemed solid, as Cal had his commitment for a short time last spring, and his brother Syd'Quan was a former Bear.
But again, Tosh Lupoi heading for Washington has been a crusher for the Bears. Thompson is now, like Jordan Payton, thinking about being a Husky.
This is going to come down to a Bears vs. Huskies fight until next Wednesday.
1. Jameis Winston, QB
6 of 6Now, I don't have Jameis Winston at No. 1 on this list because he's the recruit wavering the most, but because he's the most interesting to me.
He's the top QB on my board and a top-15 overall player.
He's committed to Florida State, but in-state Alabama has not given up. In fact, Winston will host the Tide in his home sometime this week.
I think he signs with FSU, but you never know until it's official.
