Ohio State Football Recruiting: Why OSU Needs Stefon Diggs, Davonte Neal
National signing day is just a week away, and Ohio State's 2012 recruiting class is almost completed.
The work Urban Meyer has done in just two short months since becoming head coach is nothing short of spectacular, turning a class that was mediocre into a top-flight group of prospects.
There is still plenty of work that needs to be done, though, and the biggest need left to fill might not even be filled until after NSD.
For Meyer's spread attack to work, the Buckeyes need to find a big-time gamebreaker on offense with pure speed and open-field elusiveness. They don't have that on their roster (at least that we know of) or in their recruiting class.
That's where two prospects that are high on the Buckeyes come into play: Stefon Diggs (Olney, Md.) and Davonte Neal (Chaparral, Ariz.).
Diggs and Neal are each 5-star prospects on one or more different recruiting services (Diggs on Scout.com and Rivals.com and Neal on ESPN.com) and are very similar in skill set—not necessarily big, but just blazing fast.
Diggs may be the more explosive offensive player, but Neal may be the more ready to step into a defined role as a wide receiver.
Ohio State would be more than willing to take either player or quite possibly both.
Diggs is expected to visit Ohio State sometime in the following weeks and will make his decision sometime after national signing day, while Neal has already visited Ohio State and has been a lifelong fan of the Buckeyes.
However, the crux is that new Arizona coach Rich Rodriguez has hired Neal's high school coach, and that may make the odds of him staying in-state much higher than anticipated.
The Buckeyes do have the advantage of having Meyer, widely regarded as the best recruiting head coach in all of college football. The class that he has pulled together in two months despite being away from coaching for almost a full year is nothing short of mind-blowing. But his first class at Ohio State does need that explosive playmaker, the Percy Harvin-esque player that can give Braxton Miller a big-time weapon.
Whether or not Diggs or Neal becomes the next Sammy Watkins in terms of immediate impact, that type of player is what Ohio State needs to get.
It's tough to predict whether the Buckeyes will be able to get one or, by some divine miracle, both of these players. Regardless, these are the guys Ohio State should be putting the full-court press on.
Either player could step in almost immediately and fill a huge role in this year's offense. It's just a matter of which player decides to sign his name on the National Letter of Intent and fax it to Ohio State.
