Breaking Down Free Agent Targets for Every NFC North Team

B/R StudiosJan 24, 2012

With the NFL season wrapping up, teams are evaluating their rosters to get ready for offseason moves and acquisitions.  First will come the draft, and then free agency will have its way.

In the NFC North, the Packers probably have the most decisions to make regarding free agents on their own roster.  The Vikings certainly have the most gaps to fill, but all four teams have needs that they must address.

Starting with Minnesota, aside from Percy Harvin, the Vikings need a total boost at wide receiver, but it would be no surprise to see them take a wideout in the first round.  Along with receiver the Vikings whole secondary could help, as well as the offensive lines.  These two positions should definitely be addressed in free agency.

For the Lions, their first priority will be deciding who to re-sign on their large list of free agents.  Defensive end Cliff Avril will be a hot commodity come free agency, as will Kevin Smith, Stephen Tulloch and Eric Wright.  From there, the Lions will definitely be looking to add a cornerback, and possibly a running back or defensive end.

The Chicago Bears have 14 free agents of their own with their biggest and most obvious being running back Matt Forte, but don’t be surprised if he gets franchise tagged.  The Bears other areas of concern are at wide receiver, and in the secondary at cornerback.  The Bears are in desperate need of a deep ball threat, and on the other side of the ball, someone to defend the deep ball threat.

With a long list of free agents of their own, the Packers also have decisions to make regarding who to retain and who to let walk.  Tight end Jermichael Finley, cornerback Jarrett Bush and Scott Wells are three guys who are likely to be re-signed.

As far as pickups, the Packers definitely need a boost in their pass rush, whether that be on the defensive line or in the line backing corp.  With running back Ryan Grant likely to walk, they will need to look to fill a spot there and perhaps at left tackle as well, with Chad Clifton’s status with the team up in the air.
