Mayweather vs Pacquiao: Superfight More Likely After Cotto Denies Rematch Rumors
The potential superfight between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao is finally starting to take shape after the latest development in this odd saga.
Miguel Cotto—Pacquiao's most likely challenger if the Mayweather fight falls through—recently denied reported rumors that he had agreed to terms on a rematch with Pacquiao. While this may seem like a small victory for fight fans, it leaves the door open for the potential May 5 super bout.
The world's two best pound-for-pound fighters have been teasing us for years, but with Mayweather's upcoming jail stint on the horizon, we finally have a legitimate deadline.
Now, if Mayweather just swallows a little pride, this fight will actually happen.
The only remaining obstacle is the dividing of the purse. While Pacquiao wants a reasonable 50-50 split, Mayweather says that "can't happen."
Based on his legal issues, Mayweather probably needs the money more. However, I'm pretty sure his insistence on making more than Pacquiao is merely a product of his tough guy persona.
Mayweather never publicly backs down from anybody, and conceding on the 50-50 split would make him look like a punk to some. Others may interpret the concession as mature, but that's not a trait often associated with Mayweather.
If this fight actually goes down, we will be treated to one of the greatest bouts in history. Pacquiao's trademark aggressiveness contrasts perfectly with Mayweather's defensive style.
They are undeniably the two best fighters of this era, and with the historical implications hanging overhead, we would get maximum effort from both.
One decisive bout for the throne would shatter pay-per-view records and satisfy every boxing lover's lust.
The fan in me is begging for this fight to happen, and after Cotto's statement, it looks more likely than ever.
Unfortunately, I know how prideful Mayweather and Pacquiao truly are. I'd be surprised if this dream fight ever becomes a reality.
