How Far Can Big British Heavyweight David Price Go?

Will ProtheroeMay 31, 2018

David Price impressed again at the Liverpool Olympia, needing just 73 seconds to destroy veteran John McDermott.

Promoter Frank Maloney stated, "tonight we saw a real heavyweight star born."

But just how good is Price? And, how far can he go in the heavyweight division?

McDermott tried to rattle Price by coming out swinging. After landing an overhand right, McDermott looked to build up a head of steam.

Instead, he was socked with a jaw-rattling uppercut from Price, leaving him sprawled on the canvas. McDermott gamely got up before being decked seconds later by a solid right from Price.

Another right to the chin knocked McDermott to the floor once more. And, the third time proved to be the charm as McDermott was counted out as he tried to make it to his feet.

Winning in such devastating fashion will get Price noticed. After the fight, Price called out fellow big man Tyson Fury. The two look set to meet sometime this year.

The victory over McDermott is impressive, but Big John weighed in at a career-heavy 271 pounds. He looked completely out of shape and is far from an elite opponent.

Contrastingly, Price looked in good condition and well prepared, something we see all to little of in the heavyweight division.

Price definitely has the tools to beat Tyson Fury. Fury would be the favourite if the battle of the giants were to happen, but he has weaknesses that Price can expose.

There is no doubt that Price hits harder than Fury's last opponent Neven Pajkic does. The Canadian floored Fury in the second round with a right to the head. There is no reason why Price would not be able to do the same.

The fight against McDermott showed that Price also possesses the killer instincts needed to take advantage of a weakened opponent. Once McDermott looked in trouble, Price was relentless in making sure the fight ended within the round.

The downside of this is that Price was throwing pretty wild punches while getting rid of McDermott. This could cause Price to come unstuck against better opponents.

If Price could beat Fury, he would become a threat to many top heavyweights.

His height alone makes him a danger. At 6' 8", he would tower over most of them, and, if he can refine his jab, people will have trouble getting to him.

His next fight looks set to be staged across the Atlantic with Maloney sounding out the Sergio Martinez bout with Matthew Macklin at Madison Square Garden as a possible option.

While Fury has made noises about challenging Wladimir Klitschko, hopefully Price will stay slightly more sensible and mature by beating the opponents that Maloney puts in front of him. Maloney is a good, experienced promoter, having guided Lennox Lewis to heavyweight glory in the 1990's.

Is Price now the most dangerous heavyweight in Britain? Can he get the better of fellow giant Tyson Fury? Comment below.
