Chelsea FC: What Andre Villas Boas Should've Done in Norwich Tie
Jesse PJun 7, 2018
For those of you who didn't wake up early to catch the 0-0 draw on Saturday, consider yourselves lucky. As enjoyable as it is to watch Chelsea play, they were nowhere near the level that they are expected to perform.
Let's analyze what exactly Andre Villas Boas did wrong:
- Starting Daniel Sturridge: I know he has become an impact player in Chelsea'a season this year but he was completely absent for the entire game. He should've been introduced as a sub late in the game to give him some game time to transition back to the starting line up and make him fight for the starting spot.

- Playing Juan Mata wide: Week in, week out, there are always articles about the impact that Mata could make as a central player just behind the striker. This game should be one to look at for AVB and consider playing him centrally, because the Spaniard was absolutely all over the place and not creating or opening an attack. It seemed as though he was given the instructions to run all over the place to try to create something but whatever the instructions, it didn't work.
- Lack of width: Lampard came off early in the game which seemed to completely shut down the left flank, because Malouda was in a central position but kept drifting to the left wing where Mata was supposed to be, meaning Cole had to have been confused whether to make a run or not. Sturridge never tracked back to receive the ball and always looked like he was going for goal instead of playing as a winger.
- A shaky defense: When you see a striker coming back to defend, you know something is not right. The defense all together was not right at all. David Luiz had one of his best games yet, but on the other hand Torres had to come back to help.
What did AVB get right:
- Starting Frank Lampard: it was so nice to see Lampard back into the starting lineup again and it was such a shame that he had to come off injured. The game completely changed from that moment on and the substitution did not help.
- Starting David Luiz: There was much speculation over Gary Cahill making his debut against Norwich but with less than a week's training on new grounds with new players and coaching staff, AVB did the right thing to start Luiz
- Telling Torres to fight for the ball: Torres was always involved in the play both on defense and offense. the only problem with that was he was always behind the play and could never be in the middle of the box when the ball was driven in.
What AVB Should have Done:
- Starting Lineup: Playing Romeu instead of Meireles in CDM, Moving Meireles to RCM and Ramires to RM.
- Changing the Substitutions: Taking Lampard off for Malouda and changing to a 4-4-1-1 with Malouda on the left and Mata on the right with Sturridge behind Torres would have benefitted the team massively in my opinion. Either that or bringing on Romeu for Lampard instead. Once Essien came on, the formation should have shifted to a 4-4-2 with Malouda on the left, Ramires on the right, and Mata sitting behind Torres while subbing Sturridge off or switching to the 4-4-2 once Lukaku came on.
- Playing to your strengths: Chelsea do not have any out-and-out wingers, especially when Mata tends to come inside. Kalou is the closest, but he is at the African Cup of Nations. Chelsea need to allow someone to play right behind Torres to feed him the through balls he needs, and create chances by either playing left and right midfielders or pinching the central midfield and allow the full backs to open play up.
