Michigan Had No Choice but to Pull Yuri Wright's Offer After Offensive Tweets

Randy ChambersJun 7, 2018

College football recruiting is all about landing the most talented players in the country. Go out and do whatever it takes to get that No. 1 prospect. After all, he could be the final piece your team needs to win your conference or put you over the top for a possible BCS national championship.

But there becomes a point where you just have to walk away from a recruit, no matter how talented he may be. And Yuri Wright may be that recruit.

Wright is considered one of the top cornerbacks in this year's class and is a 4-star player, according to top recruiting sites. He has great coverage skills, great instincts on the football and isn't afraid to make a tackle and help stop the run. He has all of the tools to be a great player at the college level, but that really doesn't matter anymore.

Wright took to his Twitter account and posted several different sexually offensive tweets and even included a few racial slurs as well.

You can read some of those tweets here, via ChatSports, who reported that Wright was no longer being recruited by Michigan because of the tweets. They have resulted in him being expelled from his high school, Don Bosco Prep, in New Jersey. It's also forced schools like the Michigan Wolverines to pull their offer off the table and to wash their hands of the talented cornerback.

You could call it an honest mistake, but everybody should know the power that these social networking sites hold by now. We see it all the time where an athlete posts something that he would later regret. It's spoken about on television and according to Rivals.com analyst Mike Farrell, it was often talked about at Don Bosco Prep as well.

"I know conversations about Facebook and Twitter occur all the time at high schools, especially at Don Bosco," Farrell said.

"Coach Toal teaches the kids more than just football," Farrell said. "He's always teaching them about representing themselves and their school—on the field, on recruiting trips, on home visits by coaches. Don Bosco is the last place I would expect this to happen."

Athletes must know that every move they make and everything they post on the Internet ends up being seen by everybody else. The second you click send, it's there forever. Erasing it after millions have seen it and reported about it already doesn't make matters any better.

And I'm sure we've all heard much worse than what the young man posted on his Twitter account, but those people weren't trying to impress top-notch colleges. They also aren't in the national spotlight, with so many people watching their every move and the media reporting everything they do and say.

Michigan had no choice but to move on from Wright. They are one of the biggest programs in college football and have a reputation to keep. It just wouldn't have looked good for the program to continue to recruit him, and they don't need the added distractions, as they're a program that appears to be once again on top of the college football world.

Wright also visited schools like Colorado, Rutgers, Notre Dame and Georgia. And with his talent, I'm sure more schools will jump on board and try to get that commitment.

It may not be the most popular thing to do, but Michigan did do the right thing with the way they handled Wright and this Twitter situation.
