Yuri Wright: High School Star's Twitter Debacle a Warning to Other Prep Athletes
Yuri Wright, one of the best cornerback recruits in the nation, had been spending the last few months trying to decide where to attend college.
Well, he may have just made the decision a whole lot easier.
After being expelled from Don Bosco High School earlier this week because of some racist, vulgar and downright unspeakable Tweets (Warning: Tweets in link are R-rated. Proceed with caution), the University of Michigan, Wright's dream school, has pulled its scholarship offer, according to sources.
Notre Dame hasn't made a move, but Wright's apparent No. 2 is expected to pull its offer as well.
According to Mike Farrell of Rivals, Rutgers, and possibly two other unnamed schools, still reportedly have an interest in Wright, so it appears he might just escape this situation mostly unscathed.
But Holy Poop. How can one person be so moronic? How can the 85th-best college football recruit (according to Rivals) just go online and say such obviously degrading things?
It's worth noting that Wright's Twitter account was private and his Tweets were protected, but the kid had over 1,700 followers. I know he's popular, but I'm guessing those weren't all kids from his high school.
It's not like he was really being selective about who could see what he wrote.
There's no question that members of the media were following him. And even if they weren't, here's a little tip for Mr. Wright:
Anything you put on this thing they call the Internets is going to be visible to 99 percent of the population, and 100 percent if what you say is interesting enough.
Twitter is a powerful, powerful medium. Just ask Rob Lowe.
In fact, that tip should go out to all high-school athletes. With Facebook and Twitter, you are spotlighted in the public-eye more than ever. And if you're a top prospect, everyone is going to be "friending" you or "following" you.
Everyone is watching what you say and nothing is private. So act like a man, because it's like a 24-hour, seven-day-a-week press conference.
Wright may have thought his comments were "manly" but nothing has ever sounded so childish. He needs to have a long talk with Herm Edwards.
Rutgers better be careful with the four-star cornerback its likely going to get, and every young athlete better be careful with whatever he or she posts.
Because we're watching. Everyone is always watching.
Just not in a creepy way.
