Tiger Woods Can't Let Hank Haney's Book Bother Him
Tiger Woods has been around long enough that he needs to understand something: Unfair criticism is part of being a celebrity.
In his life Tiger has received plenty of perks because of his high profile, but those come with drawbacks. So, the fact that he's seriously bothered by former swing coach Hank Haney's book is more than a little confusing.
Bob Harig of ESPN quoted Woods' saying that Haney's book, The Big Miss, bothered him.
"I think it's unprofessional and very disappointing...especially because it's someone I worked with and trusted as a friend...There have been other one-sided books about me, and I think people understand that this book is about money. I'm not going to waste my time reading it.
"
If Woods had just given us the last sentence, we wouldn't be here.
The fact of the matter is that it doesn't matter what Haney's motivations were. It doesn't matter if what he said was fabricated, or just not true. The fact of the matter is that Woods has been a professional golfer for nearly 16 years. There hasn't been a single day in that time when the spotlight didn't shine directly on him.
Part of being a celebrity is that people around you are going to try to gain money off of you. Unfortunately, that means that more often than not, they will exploit your weaknesses, usually in writing. People out there want to know about the celebrity, so they will buy the book.
As Woods himself pointed out, this isn't even the first time it's happened to him. Woods is certainly not the first celebrity to fall victim to this and will absolutely not be the last.
By making it known that he's disappointed, Woods is only opening the door for more books like this to be written.
Obviously, Woods is a human. It is okay to be human, and that means that some things are going to hurt your feelings. That is not the problem here. But there is a huge difference between having your feelings hurt and letting that show in public.
That is why, as Woods said, "There have been other one-sided books," and there will continue to be. In the spotlight you need to show that things don't bother you. When that happens, there is a much better chance that future moneymaking grabs won't take place.
Woods has been in the spotlight too long to let this bother him. If this book is completely true, completely false or anywhere in between, he can't show that it annoys him.
