ESPNU 150: SEC Continues Dominance in Updated Recruit Rankings
With the high school all-star games completed, most recruiting sites have updated their overall rankings for the class of 2012. The new ESPNU 150 came out today, and the Southeastern Conference is loaded from top to bottom, further proving it is the best in the country.
The No. 1 overall recruit on the list is Mario Edwards, who is committed to play at Florida State. After that, you'll see the Texas Longhorns are nicely represented with a couple of big-name recruits, but for the most part, the SEC reigns supreme.
The best recruits in the country are smart enough to realize that playing down South is the best way to win in college football.
Of the Top 25, seven of the committed recruits are headed to SEC schools, and of the eight recruits who haven't made up their minds yet, all but one have at least one SEC school on their list.
Of the Top 50, 17 have already committed to SEC schools, and that number will definitely grow.
Seven of those 17 recruits are headed to Alabama, and they made up their mind before the Crimson Tide won the BCS National Championship.
While I disagree with their No. 1 overall player, it's hard to say that ESPNU's updated rankings are drastically off base or anything like that.
The No. 1 overall player should be wide receiver Dorial Green-Beckham, who is a 6'6", 220-pound playmaker that is sure to be an immediate impact. But perhaps ESPN just wanted to be different.
Either that, or they wanted to make sure their top recruit wouldn't be a guy headed to the SEC. Of course, Green-Beckham has yet to make up his mind, but with three of his top five schools being from the SEC, his chances of landing in the south are very high.
His top five are Alabama, Arkansas, Missouri, Oklahoma and Texas, and if he's smart, he'll pick one of the SEC schools because succeeding against the best talent in the country is the easiest way to be a top NFL draft pick once eligible.
We've seen the SEC dominate on the field for six straight seasons, continuously winning national championships. The way the conference is accomplishing such amazing feats is by thriving on the recruiting trail.
When National Signing Day passes and all recruits have made signed national letter of intents, I wouldn't be surprised if nearly 15 of of the Top 25 heads to SEC country.
Between the national exposure, consistent record of winning, outstanding facilities and passionate fanbases, it's easy to see why the nation's best recruits are choosing to play in the SEC.
It's unlikely ESPNU will change it's Top 150 again, but one things for sure: The SEC will continue to own recruiting.
