Ohio State Football Recruiting: Meet David Perkins, the Newest Buckeye
Ohio State has immediately felt the Urban Meyer effect, as Meyer has come in and managed to assemble one of the best recruiting classes in the country in just a little over a month on the job.
The Buckeyes currently have 22 commitments for their 2012 class, including pledges from some of the top-rated recruits in the country such as defensive ends Noah Spence (Bishop McDevitt HS, Ohio) and Adolphus Washington (Taft HS, Ohio), defensive tackle Tommy Schutt (Glenbard West HS, Illinois) and running back Brionte Dunn (Glenoak HS, Ohio).
The class got another big boost last night, when highly-touted linebacker David Perkins, who played for Indiana’s Washington high school, announced his commitment to the Buckeyes.
Perkins must have enjoyed his visit to Columbus this past weekend enough to spurn offers from the likes of Illinois, LSU, Michigan State, Notre Dame, Oregon, Tennessee and a host of other schools, and give his commitment to Urban Meyer and Ohio State.
The 6’1" 220-pound Perkins is rated as a 4-star prospect by Rivals, Scout and ESPN, and he’s considered to be one of the best prospects that the state of Indiana has to offer this year.
Perkins has the skill-set to fit in at a variety of different positions, including running back and linebacker, and it will be interesting to see which side of the ball the Ohio State coaching staff believes he’s the most valuable on.
One thing’s for sure, Perkins, or “Boom” as he’s nicknamed, definitely brings explosiveness to Columbus, and he’s the type of impact player who will add a valuable spark to the Buckeyes no matter where he lines up, although it's likely that his future is at outside linebacker.
Perkins fits the mold of the type of athletic specimen that Meyer loved to recruit when he was at Florida.
It's obvious that the coach is now trying his hardest to inject some much-needed speed into the Buckeyes' roster, as he attempts to build a team that he hopes will be able to outrun everyone else in the Big Ten in the coming years.
