Rob Lowe's Peyton Manning Retirement Tweet Causes Mass Hysteria on Twitter

Jun 6, 2018

We have some breaking news to report: Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning is going to retire from the NFL.

No, the news doesn't come from Adam Schefter. Nor does it come from Jay Glazer, Peter King, Albert Breer, Jason La Canfora or any of your other favorite NFL journalists.

It comes from Rob Lowe.

Rob Lowe as in Rob Lowe the actor.

Yeah, that Rob Lowe. Here's his scoop:

As soon as this "scoop" showed up on Lowe's timeline, Twitter slowed to a crawl, and time as we know it stopped altogether.

When it started again, anyone and everyone took to Twitter to call BS on Lowe. Let's take a moment to look at some of the very best tweets.

Naturally, Peyton's Head was one of the first to chime in:

He then added this:

Blogger Steve Lepore hopped on "blame SOPA" bandwagon, claiming that a tweet like this was inevitable given the uncertain state of the Internet today:

Believe it or now, Bleacher Report Lead Writer Dan Levy is actually rather excited about the idea of Lowe breaking news:

Judy Battista of The New York Times doesn't think the idea of Lowe breaking sports news is all that far-fetched:

Cindy Boren of the Washington Post, on the other hand, is hoping this scoop isn't true. If it is, she's not going to enjoy her lunch all that much:

Gregg Doyel of CBSSports has some breaking news of his own about Lowe, and it sounds legit:

Bob Kravitz of the Indianapolis Star is a guy who would break news like this, but it has now become his job to find out whether it's true:

Jimmy Traina of SI.com points out that we'll know exactly when this news is true:

Mike Rosenberg of the Detroit Free Press and SI.com has a similar idea:

Bobby Big Wheel has an even better notion:

You get the idea. Lowe did his damnedest to break some legitimate NFL news, but it's clear that exactly nobody is buying it.

Man are we going to look like jackasses if Lowe is right on the money with this scoop. And oddly enough, Lowe is sticking to his guns:

Don't worry, Mr. Lowe. You can rest assured that everyone is hoping you're wrong.

Lo and behold, ESPN's Chris Mortensen eventually chimed in with this:

And Colts owner Jim Irsay chimed in with this:

Boom. Rob Lowe, you've been owned.

Now, tell us what you learned in 140 characters or less. We'll wait.
