WWE Opinion: John Cena and If Your Favorite Wrestler Won the Golden Globe...

Alfred KonuwaJun 7, 2018

The Golden Globe Awards Sunday night kicked off the start of the always pretentious, awkward and politically-driven awards season, as movies and shows you probably have never heard of and/or did not see earn praise from the Hollywood Foreign Press.

The WWE has its own road to pave towards a high-profile event as the road to WrestleMania is set to kick off at the end of the month with the 25th anniversary edition of the WWE Royal Rumble.

However, before we get to our first stop on the road to WrestleMania, why not have a little fun with the otherwise overly serious awards ceremonies and praise some of our own for their tireless efforts in becoming WWE's very best superstars.

Best Lead Actor: John Cena

Say what you want about John Cena...

You know the rest.

The consummate poster boy for the WWE has spent another year as the unquestioned top star of the company.  CM Punk arguably had the better year in terms of creating buzz and merchandise sales, but when it comes down to it, John Cena's financial impact on the WWE just cannot be disputed.

In fact, Cena was so polarizing as WWE's "cookie-cutter babyface" that the WWE is now marketing anti-Cena t-shirts, meaning there is even money in hating the longtime babyface.

To put Cena's value to the WWE in perspective, it was reported Tuesday by ESPN financial expert Michelle Steele that the former multiple-time world champion was worth $106 million in retail value to the company.  And they wonder why the WWE hasn't turned him heel yet.

Best Lead Actress: Beth Phoenix

2 of 5

Beth Phoenix has virtually carried the WWE Divas division all by her lonesome.  Saddled with questionable competition and glorified models, the talented Diva's best potential opponent—Natalya—is currently her greatest ally.

Phoenix has done her best to have good matches with the likes of Kelly Kelly, Eve, Alicia Fox and the Bella Twins, and, for the most part, she has been able to pull it off.

But limited exposure for the WWE Divas coupled with a lack of wrestling experience from Phoenix's foes has made life tough for the Glamazon to the point where she is now in the final stages of sporting a nasty shiner she suffered after being stiffed by Alicia Fox.

Best Supporting Actor: Randy Orton

3 of 5

Currently out due to an unspecified back injury, Randy Orton is quietly expected to return at the Royal Rumble in his hometown of St. Louis, Missouri and is the odds-on favorite in a wide open field to win the event.

Orton spent much of 2011 as the World Champion, as the talented Viper continues to try to be to SmackDown what John Cena is to RAW, and for that matter to the WWE.

In the "Randy Savage" role to Cena's Hulk Hogan, Orton is undoubtedly a bit awkward as a babyface, but his role as a hero is justified by his popularity, which at times rivals his top counterpart.

Come WrestleMania season, expect Randy Orton to return to the top of the card as he'll likely contend for the world championship.

Best Independent Film: CM Punk

4 of 5

CM Punk's long road to the WWE from the independent wrestling scene has solidified him as one of the most successful cult heroes in WWE history.

Much like an independent film, CM Punk isn't the strongest box office draw nor does he have much mainstream appeal to a PG generation WWE with the arm tattoo sleeves and what not.

But those who follow wrestling closely realize that not only may he be the best wrestler in the WWE, he is one of the best in the world.

An impending feud with the returning Chris Jericho could do wonders for Punk's box office potential, as the two figure to have at least one match (if not a series of them) that should easily contend for match of the year.

Best Silent Movie: Chris Jericho

5 of 5

The silent movie era is long gone, I get that, but not in the WWE.  In fact, Chris Jericho's current string of performances that lack any semblance of a monologue have been enough to earn the future Hall of Famer an award in this category.

For two weeks now, Jericho has basked in cheers and adoration only to respond with his own satirical rendition of babyface heat-seeking.

There is no end in sight for Jericho's one-man show, and frustrated fans should expect to see more of the same leading up to the Royal Rumble—an event in which Jericho has to be considered as a potential winner for the first time in his illustrious career.
