Miami Football Recruiting: Meet Randy Johnson, the Hurricanes Flagship Recruit

Bleacher ReportJan 15, 2012

Randy "Duke" Johnson isn't the biggest, the fastest, or the strongest player when ever he gets on the football field.

In fact, he may not be the second of any of the above either, but through his high school career he was one of the the best football player in the state of Florida.

That is not my opinion, that is a fact.

During his sophomore campaign, Duke ran for 1,540 yards and 24 touchdowns on just 152 carries (10.13 yards per carry). Duke ran for over 200 yards in three straight games that season.

Duke's junior season was more of the same as he has 1,482 yards and 17 touchdowns even while missing some games due to injury.

Duke definitely saved his best for last as he ran for 2,087 yards and 29 touchdowns on 208 carries his senior year.

When the playoffs started Johnson put his team on the back running for 700 yards and 11 touchdowns, including a 375 yard performance in the semifinals.

The spectacular senior season by Duke earned him the Mr. Florida Football award, given to the best overall football player in the state.

For his career, Duke finished with 5,069 yards rushing and 52 touchdowns, third best in county history.

As expected, many colleges were interested in having Duke come play for the but his heart has always been in Miami. Duke's father, who passed away four years from leukemia, used to take him to all the Hurricane games growing up.

Overall, what Duke lacks in size (5'9, 190 lbs), he makes up with quickness and field vision.

Johnson recently showed those skills off against the best high school players in the nation at the Under Armour All-American game.

Duke led all rushers with nine carries for 50 yards. He also returned a kick off return for 71 yards.

With the recent departure of Lamar Miller, Miami will be lacking any sort of depth in the backfield.

Duke will most likely change that next year as a true freshman.
