Texas A&M Football Recruiting: Meet Trey Williams, the Aggies' Flagship Recruit
There are two weeks left until signing day and the Texas A&M Aggies are putting the finishing touches on a top-10 recruiting class. The Aggies have significant needs on the defensive line, at linebacker and at running back.
They have tried to address their need at running back with the most important recruit of the class in Trey Williams from Dekaney High School in Spring, Texas. Williams verbally committed to the Aggies back in April and has remained strong in his commitment even with the changes in the coaching staff.
Williams had a senior season for the ages. The 5'9", 185-pound running back rushed for an astonishing 3,884 yards and 48 touchdowns. Dekaney rode Williams all the way to the 5A Division-II state championship. He put up one of the best seasons in the history of Texas high school football, and his recruiting has intensified because of it.
Once viewed as a small running back who will not be an every-down player in college, college scouts have now realized that Williams can be a true difference-maker at the next level.
The Aggies currently have three running backs on the roster with any playing experience.
- Christine Michael is coming off an ACL injury, and it normally takes two years to fully recover from an ACL tear, so it's unknown how effective Michal will be in 2012.
- Ben Malena returns, but he is more of a grinding-type running back. He is dependable but not a franchise running back.
- Will Randolph returns but he has had issues with ball security. He may end up at receiver in Kevin Sumlin's offense to take advantage of his game-breaking speed.
The Aggies have a serious need for a playmaker at the running back position entering 2012 and that is where Williams fits into the equation. He can step in right away and get significant carries as a freshman. He can also help on special teams in the kick return game.
Williams has received multiple national awards and is one of the top high school running backs in the nation. He is the type of recruit other recruits will follow to a school to play with. Williams is a national name, and when Sumlin signs him it will be yet another sign to the Southeastern Conference fans and coaches that the Aggies hired the right coach.
Williams is the Aggies version of Marcus Lattimore or Michael Dyer. He can step on campus and be a difference-maker in the SEC in his freshman year.
Quarterback Matt Davis graduated high school a semester early and is already on campus. Ever since he committed, Davis has been a leader in the 2012 recruiting class and has been instrumental in keeping the class together during a coaching change.
While he is obviously a leader and likely a future team captain, Davis is not as important to this class as Williams. The running back from Dekaney gives this class name recognition and will ensure A&M gets some national publicity on signing day. On and off the field Williams is the bell cow recruit of this class.
