UFC 142 Fight Card: Dana White Says Rumble Johnson's Job Is on the Line
When Anthony "Rumble" Johnson decided to make the move up from welterweight to middleweight, many people believed that his issues with cutting weight would be over.
Johnson struggled during almost every one of his welterweight fights to make weight, coming in overweight on several occasions.
However, during yesterday's weigh-ins for his middleweight debut against Vitor Belfort, Johnson proved that cutting weight was still an issue, coming in an astounding 11 pounds over the 186 pound limit.
Because of this, Johnson's fight with Belfort was moved to a light heavyweight fight and Johnson was required to be under the 205-pound limit or else the fight would be scratched. Johnson weighed in at 204 pounds this morning so the fight will still take place.
Johnson has crossed over one hurdle, but according to ESPN.com, it may not be the only hurdle he has to overcome this weekend.
During an interview, White revealed that Johnson's job will be, in fact, on the line this weekend.
"His job is on the line," White said. "His job is absolutely on the line, win or lose."
"Complete and absolute unprofessionalism—that's what happened. There's no other way it can be explained."
According to Johnson's team, the 27-year-old fighter became ill hours before the weigh-in and was advised by a doctor to take on several fluids to try and feel better.
It was revealed that Johnson did as the doctor suggested and felt better after taking the fluids, but by that time he had no time to try and shed the weight before weigh-ins.
Johnson would later talk about the situation on his Facebook page,
"Yeah it was for medical reason and I did what the UFC Dr told me to do," he said. "Say what you want I'm still gonna do my thang. You try not having feeling in your legs and can't move then and see how you look at life after that."
As Johnson and Belfort battle it out in the Octagon tonight, there is no doubt that Johnson's future in the UFC will be in the back of his mind.
If he puts together an unimpressive performance, it could be the last time we see him in the Octagon.
