Houston Marathon 2012 Results: US Olympic Trial Winners
The United States Olympic Marathon trials were held in Houston on Saturday for the men's and women's teams, and several talented athletes punched their ticket to this summer's Olympic Games in London.
Let's look at the men's and women's qualifiers from Saturday, many of whom will make their Olympic debuts this summer.
Men's Qualifiers
Meb Keflezighi finished in first place on Saturday with a time of 2:09:08. It was a personal record for him in the marathon, and it's a great pace for him to practice as the Olympic games approach. Keflezighi won the silver medal at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece, and the 36-year-old will be looking to reach the medal stand again later this year in what probably will be his final Olympic experience.
Ryan Hall finished second with an unofficial time of 2:09.30, a really impressive time for him that he can look to improve before the London games. The 29-year-old runner won the 2008 Marathon trials.
Abdi Abdirahman finished third and was the final runner to qualify for the Olympic team. He ran the Houston course in 2:09.42.
Women's Qualifiers
Shalane Flanagan finished first in the women's marathon with a trials record time of 2:25.38, a fantastic performance to build on as she prepares for her Olympic debut this summer. Flanagan finished second in the New York Marathon in 2010.
Second place qualifier Desiree Davila will also make her Olympic debut in London thanks to her impressive time of 2:25.55. She also finished second at the 2011 Boston Marathon.
Kara Goucher was the final woman to qualify on Saturday, finishing the race with a time of 2:26.06. With the third place finish, Goucher earned her second trip to the Olympic games.
