Chael Sonnen Says If He Never Wins UFC Gold His Career Will Be a Huge Failure
According to Chael Patrick Sonnen, if he doesn’t win UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) gold before the end of his career, he will deem himself an almighty failure.
"'One night, one moment, 12 pounds of gold,' he said when asked what he hopes his legacy will be. 'This will all be a colossal failure if I don't have that one night,' Sonnen told MMA:30.
"
At UFC 117, Sonnen was on the verge of fulfilling that dream after taking current middleweight champion Anderson “The Spider” Silva to the brink of break point. For almost the entirety of the five-round bout, Sonnen used his supreme wrestling to negate Silva’s stand-up game, and it’s safe to say that he also had the edge in that department as well.
Though, with less than two minutes remaining in the match, Silva locked in a triangle armbar to submit Sonnen and thus retain his title in the process.
That was almost 18 months ago, but now, the 34-year-old NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) Division I All-American wrestler has the opportunity to once again vie for the coveted 185-pound Holy Grail that eluded him that night at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, California.
Firstly, Sonnen has to somehow get past another combatant in the guise of Mark “The Filipino Wrecking Machine” Munoz, who also harbors the same thoughts of contesting for the title.
Both Sonnen and Munoz, who himself also has NCAA Division l credentials, are slated to throw down in the Windy City on Jan. 28 at UFC on Fox 2 later this month.
If Sonnen can cross that hurdle, then the next stop is a possible shot at Silva and the UFC glory that will determine his legacy in MMA.
