UFC 142 Results: Jose Aldo Will Hand Chad Mendes His First Defeat

Ryan RudnanskyJun 7, 2018

Chad Mendes heads into Brazil on Saturday with an undefeated record, something he's unlikely to relinquish without a fight.

Jose Aldo, on the other hand, is fighting in his home country and will be determined to put on a show in UFC 142.

Aldo has shown throughout his career that his striking ability is not to be reckoned with, going 20-1 and 2-0 in the UFC. He's ranked as the No. 1 featherweight in the world at 25 years old, and he's been so dominant on his feet that he's rarely had to put his ground game to use.

Mendes, while certainly no slouch as a striker, has gone 11-0 largely because of his startling wrestling. If things go to the ground early, Mendes has a chance to knock off Aldo in front of his adoring fans.

One thing that should concern Aldo is how he was able to be taken down late against Mark Hominick in April. If that happens against Mendes, he could be in trouble.

The difference for me, however, is that Aldo has shown time and time again that he can withstand such fights if need be. His experience in a greater number of fights will help him tremendously if Mendes gets him on the ground.

There's also the potential for Aldo to keep the fight upright, which would undoubtedly turn the tide in his favor. Mendes has clearly improved his striking ability, but he's not going to be able to go at Aldo like he did against Michihiro Omigawa in February.

In the end, Aldo will be too prepared and too explosive on his feet for Mendes in Brazil, and Aldo will score the 21st victory of his sterling career.
