Ohio State Football Recruiting: Stefon Diggs Must Be Main Focus for Urban Meyer
When Urban Meyer was named head coach of the Ohio State Buckeyes, many knew that it wouldn't be long before they were back on top of the Big Ten because he is so skilled in recruiting.
With National Signing Day quickly approaching, Meyer has a lot of work to do to ensure that Ohio State finishes with a strong 2012 recruiting class.
He already has some superb talent verbally committed to play for him, but his top priority in this next month or so has to be Stefon Diggs.
Regarded as one of the best athletes in the class of 2012, Diggs does not have a favorite school at the moment. In fact, he doesn't even have a top five.
Deep down, Diggs might have an idea where he wants to go, but he certainly isn't giving away any hints.
Listed at 6'0", 185 pounds, Diggs has the skills to play either running back or wide receiver. His exceptional speed is what separates him from others, and his ability to make defenders miss is one of the many reasons so many schools are after him.
Diggs told Derek Tyson of ESPN that he will wait until after National Signing Day to announce his decision, which appears to be a new trend these days.
Last year, No. 1 overall recruit Jadeveon Clowney waited a week after National Signing Day.
Diggs is waiting because he wants the extra time to decide, but surely having all the spotlight on just him has to be a factor.
National Signing Day is the first day recruits can sign national letter of intent, and it's typically the day that most of those undecided recruits make their big announcements.
Ohio State is in Diggs' list of eight schools, which includes Florida, Cal, Auburn, USC, Maryland, Notre Dame and Virginia. Florida was believed to be the leader, but the departure of Charlie Weis has made everything wide open.
No matter which school he picks, Diggs is going to see the field of play right away. It will most likely be in the return game at first, but he will definitely make plays on offense as well.
The Buckeyes offense wasn't very good last year, and while Braxton Miller is expected to improve, he still needs some other weapons around him. DeVier Posey and Dan Herron are off to the NFL, which is another reason Meyer has to put all his effort into pursuing Diggs.
Meyer has the experience with hybrid offensive players like Diggs, and he would certainly give the incoming freshman plenty of opportunities to make plays.
Should Meyer get Diggs, expect him to use him like he did with Percy Harvin. Ohio State needs more than Miller's explosiveness on the offense, and Diggs can be the guy to give it to him.
Diggs will be an impact player wherever he lands, similar to De'Anthony Thomas of Oregon this year. Ohio State is in dire need of offensive help, which is exactly why Meyer must do everything in his power to get such an elite athlete.
