10 Wackiest Plays of 2011 NFL Season
Sports are often taken too seriously, so it is important to look at the funnier moments that happen throughout the year.
This NFL season had plenty of moments that ranged from embarrassing to bizarre.
The good moments will be remembered by the players forever, and the bad ones will be remembered by everyone else.
These are the wackiest plays of the 2011 NFL season.
Carolina Panthers Fumblerooski
1 of 10Cam Newton had a great rookie season, but he was a decoy on the most memorable play of the season for the Carolina Panthers.
It was a play developed by offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski and inspired by the movie "Little Giants."
The Panthers only won six games this season, but Newton is turning around the franchise as they have a little more fun on the field.
Victor Cruz Apparent Fumble
2 of 10Victor Cruz had an amazing season with plenty of great plays, but this one almost cost his team a win against the Arizona Cardinals.
The officials ruled that Cruz went down "on his own" and intentionally fumbled, so the New York Giants were able to maintain possession.
The problem with this theory is that the receiver would have done his salsa dance if he was really done with the play.
Ndamukong Suh Stomps on the Opposition
3 of 10Ndamukong Suh is a great talent, but its the things he does after the play has hurt his reputation.
On Thanksgiving, Suh was ejected for stomping on Evan Dietrich-Smith on national television.
The explanation that the young player gave was almost more ridiculous than the play, saying he was unbalanced as he got himself up.
I am sure everyone feels sorry for the Ndamukong Suh, "the misunderstood victim."
Worst Onside Kick Attempt Ever
4 of 10There were more downs than ups for the Kansas City Chiefs, but this onside kick might be a low point in the season.
With the team already down 35-10 to the New York Jets, Ryan Succop attempted a kick that went only three yards instead of the required 10.
These plays do not have that high of a success rate, but this was just embarrassing.
Ronnie Brown Tries to Do Too Much
5 of 10Physical mistakes are easy to accept; mental lapses need an explanation.
However, there is no excuse that could justify Ronnie Brown's decision to attempt a pass after he was stopped near the goal line against the San Francisco 49ers.
This is one of those plays where you might as well stay on the field, because you are not going to like what you will hear on the sidelines.
Jerome Simpson Flips into End Zone
6 of 10This play could be considered strange, but could also be listed as the best play of the 2011 season.
Jerome Simpson did a complete flip into the end zone and stuck the landing.
It is one thing for a four-foot-tall gymnast to do a flip on a mat, it is another for an athlete that weighs 200 pounds to jump over a 6' defender wearing heavy pads.
Marion Barber should be taking notes.
Postgame Handshake Causes Fight
7 of 10This was one of the most ridiculous things to happen in the NFL this season.
After defeating the Detroit Lions, San Francisco 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh got a little too excited and was rough with his handshake with Lions coach Jim Schwartz. This led to a few words, and a fight almost broke out between the two teams.
The whole situation was similar to a fight at a bar that starts with an accidental bump. Two big egos start acting tough and everything gets out of hand in a hurry.
It seems like Harbaugh has grown since this experience, but Schwartz is still the same angry man on the sidelines.
Jason Garrett Ices Own Kicker
8 of 10The Dallas Cowboys make more headlines in losses than any other team in the league.
It is partially because people expect more of the team, but mostly because someone always seems to mess up in spectacular fashion.
In this game, the goat was head coach Jason Garrett.
After a time-management error lost the Cowboys a chance at another play, the coach called a timeout and effectively "iced" his own kicker before a game-winning field goal attempt.
Dan Bailey missed the kicked and Dallas lost the game in overtime.
I wonder what the coach tells his team after a loss like that.
Interesting Fake Field Goal Attempt
9 of 10I am sorry for picking on the Kansas City Chiefs, but these guys need to get their special teams in order.
Holder Dustin Colquitt seemed to think it was a fake field goal, but no one else on the team got that message.
The only thing that happened was Colquitt was wrecked by the opposing team, and the Chiefs turned the ball over on downs.
Next time there should be a little more communication in the huddle.
Devin Hester Fake Punt Return
10 of 10The best play that never happened this season was called back because of a holding call.
Devin Hester, the most feared returner in football, went back to return a punt and was immediately swarmed by defenders.
The trick is that Hester was nowhere near the football.
Johnny Knox was on the other side of the field, easily running back the punt for a touchdown.
It fooled everyone, including the cameraman, and it was one of the most bizarre plays on the 2011 season.
