LSU Football Recruiting 2012: Who's In, Who's Out and Who's Still on the Fence?
With the college football season officially over, these next couple of months are focused on recruiting. Which teams can build for their future, and which contenders can fill a few of their needs with some of the top recruits in the country?
Although the LSU Tigers were just in a BCS National Championship Game, they also have one of the top recruiting classes this year. Needless to say, this team isn't going anywhere anytime soon.
Although they have landed quite a few top players, there are a few they missed out on, and a few more that are still considering becoming Tigers.
Here is a quick recap of the Tigers' recruiting so far.
Three Top Prospects They've Landed
1 of 3QB Gunner Kiel
LSU is never known for their quarterback play, because they rarely have a top quarterback prospect that can play the traditional way.
Kiel is the top quarterback prospect, as he has pinpoint accuracy, great decision making and can make any throw on the football field. This really adds another dimension to the Tigers offense.
TE John Thomas
Along with a top quarterback, you always need to have weapons for him to throw to. Thomas is one of those guys, rated as one of the top tight ends in this year's class. He's a big target at 6'5", 225 pounds, and is very athletic. He also has good quickness for a guy of his size.
OLB Torshiro Davis
You know it isn't an LSU team without a great defensive player, and Davis is that guy. At 6'3", 220 pounds, he is also extremely fast.
He's a speed rusher that will be able to make a lot of plays rushing the passer and help force a lot of mistakes. This top-rated linebacker could develop into a difference-maker for the Tigers defense.
Three Top Prospects They've Missed Out On
2 of 3S Landon Collins
Although Collins is wearing LSU colors in the photo, he did not end up becoming a Tiger. In fact, he went to the rival Alabama Crimson Tide, which makes this commitment that much worse for LSU fans.
He's one of the top safety prospects in the country, and has great ball skills and great instincts. Alabama's defense just got that much better (if that's even possible).
QB Anthony Alford
LSU landed the top quarterback prospect in Gunner Kiel, so missing out on Alford doesn't hurt as much. But it would have been nice watching him play the position in a LSU uniform. He's your typical dual-threat quarterback, who has great mobility and arm strength. His upside is great, but after visiting with LSU, he committed to Southern Miss.
WR Shaq Roland
Roland is one of the top athletes in this year's class, and he is versatile. With his size, at 6'1", 180 pounds, he has the ability to play either wide receiver or the safety position. At wide receiver, he is a great downfield threat and is dangerous with the ball in his hands. Despite having an offer from LSU, he gave his commitment to South Carolina.
Three Top Prospects Still Considering LSU
3 of 3DE Mario Edwards
Edwards originally committed to the Florida State Seminoles, but backed out to explore his options. LSU is one of those options, as he has an official visit lined up later this month.
He's one of the top defensive ends in this year's class, is great at rushing the passer and has great strength. This would be a huge steal if the Tigers are able to land him.
OLB Kwon Alexander
Another top defensive player is Kwon Alexander. He's rated as one of the top linebackers in this year's class. He has great defensive skills against the run and is also solid at dropping back in coverage. He's very athletic and is a good tackler.
He made his official visit to LSU back in October, but is also considering Auburn, Alabama and Florida State.
S Corey Thompson
Thompson is a very aggressive safety that loves to lay the big hit. He would fit perfect in this LSU defense as he's very physical.
He's also versatile at 6'1", 190 pounds, and has the ability to play the wide receiver or even linebacker position. He has a visit to LSU lined up later this month, the same day Edwards is expected to stop by.
