ACC Basketball: Top 10 ACC Scorers Per 40 Minutes
ACC play has just begun, but we are at the midpoint of the 2011-12 college basketball season.
We are starting to see which players are for real, and which ones were putting up numbers against lesser opponents.
Normally, we first look at a player's scoring average as a gauge of their offensive contribution.
While looking at a player's points per game (PPG) average is important, we can also see who is doing a good job of scoring based on the playing time they are getting.
This way, someone could come off the bench and still have an important impact.
To level the playing field, here is a quick look at the Top 10 ACC scorers based on points per 40 minutes (PP40).
10. Travis McKie: Wake Forest
1 of 10Travis McKie has helped the Demon Deacons get off to a 10-5 start, which is progress from last year when Wake Forest went 8-24 for the entire 2010-11 season.
The 6'7" sophomore has scored 20.2 PP40 (17.5 PPG in 34.8 minutes; No. 2 scorer) on 50.3 percent shooting from the field.
9. Ryan Kelly: Duke
2 of 10If Ryan Kelly could ever be consistent in his scoring, he would be an ACC Player of the Year candidate.
He is currently dropping with 20.3 PP40 (12.6 PPG in 24.9 minutes; Duke's No. 3 scorer).
Kelly has a nice stroke for a 6'11" PF, shooting 48.6 percent from the floor, 82.7 percent from the line and 47.6 percent from beyond the arc.
8. C.J. Leslie: North Carolina State
3 of 10C.J. Leslie continues to help the Wolfpack get back on track.
He is putting up 20.5 PP40 (13.5 PPG in 26.4 minutes; NC State's No. 1 scorer), hitting 53.1 percent of his shots from the field.
7. C.J. Harris: Wake Forest
4 of 10Once again, C.J. Harris is elevating his game, which has helped Wake make an early move into the upper half of the conference standings.
The 6'3" junior is scoring 21.0 PP40 (18.3 PPG; WFU's No. 1 scorer), shooting 52.7 percent from the field and 55.1 percent from beyond the arc.
6. John Henson: University of North Carolina
5 of 10John Henson is the first of four Tar Heels to make the top six of this list. Can you guess who the other three are?
The 6'11" junior is scoring 21.2 PP40 (14.7 PPG; UNC's No. 2 scorer) while shooting 54.8 percent from the floor.
5. Tyler Zeller: University of North Carolina
6 of 10Tyler Zeller may never make SportsCenter's Top 10 Plays of the Day, but he is as fundamentally sound as just about any other big in the nation.
Zeller scores 22.2 PP40 (14.4 PPG in 25.9 minutes; UNC's No. 3 scorer) while shooting 53.6 percent from the floor and 77.4 percent from the line.
4. Mike Scott: University of Virginia
7 of 10Mike Scott is the heart and soul of the hoops revival at Virginia.
The 6'8" fifth-year senior is scoring 22.5 PP40 (16.5 PPG in 29.4 minutes; UVA's No. 1 scorer), knocking down 59.6 percent of his shots from the floor and 79.5 percent from the line.
3. P.J. Hairston: University of North Carolina
8 of 10P.J. Hairston is the only non-starter on this list, but he provides instant offense coming off the Tar Heel bench.
He is scoring 24.3 PP40 (7.9 PPG in 13 minutes; UNC's No. 6 scorer) with 75 percent of his shots coming from beyond the arc.
2. Harrison Barnes: University of North Carolina
9 of 10Harrison Barnes is developing into one of the best small forwards in the country.
He is scoring 25.9 PP40 (16.9 PPG in 25.9 minutes; UNC's No. 1 scorer) while shooting 48.4 percent from the floor and 45.8 percent from beyond the arc.
1. Terrell Stoglin: Maryland
10 of 10Terrell Stoglin is the ACC's leading scorer (21.4 PPG) at this point of the season and he leads this list by scoring 27.1 PP40 in 31.6 minutes.
Stoglin (who comes to Maryland from Tucson, AZ) reminds many of Arizona's great PG from the early 90's, Damon Stoudamire, a compact sub-6' guard who can light it up.
