Mayweather vs. Pacquiao: Fight Could Never Live Up to Annoying Hype
He'll fight me...he'll fight me not. He'll fight me...he'll fight me not.
One of these days, Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao are going to fight. However, while it will be one of the biggest fights in history, how could it possibly live up to the hype?
What's more, when will it actually happen? The latest crop of speculation surrounding the superfight has grown from the Twitter feed of Mayweather himself, who wants Pacquiao before he heads to jail.
It's good to know the judge has boxing's best interests in mind.
Pacquiao is in the Philippines. Therefore, his promoter Bob Arum hopped on a plane so that the two could talk about the prospects for his next fight. However, while they are interested in Mayweather, they are not interested in the date he chose.
Of course not. From Lance Pugmire of the Los Angeles Times:
"Mayweather faces a June 1 date to report for an already delayed 90-day jail term in a domestic violence case, but Arum said he'd be "willing to chip in for lawyers' fees" to get that date moved again so a June 9 bout could occur.
"
Mayweather is scheduled to fight May 5 in Las Vegas against an as-yet unnamed opponent. "June 9 is perfect," Arum said. "May 5 is out, that's impossible."
The extra time is needed for construction of an arena, said Arum, claiming the fighters could generate an extra $40 million by fighting at a 40,000-plus-seat venue on the Las Vegas Strip rather than holding the bout at the 16,000-seat MGM. "You don't throw $40 million away," Arum said.
Of course, it sounds to me like more waffling from Arum.
If these two fighters are as serious about fighting one another as they want us to believe, pushing this fight back much longer would be suicide. The perfect time in each fighter's career for this fight is now.
Earlier in each fighter's career, the match would have been riskier. Lose, and some of the shine would come off that fighter's reputation.
However, now, who else is there for either that would attract half the excitement? For that matter, who else could bring half the gate?
The time has to be now. Only, after years of this back-and-forth, never-on-the-same-page crap between each fighter's camp, it's unlikely the fight itself could live up to the gigantic hype that's developed.
After such a wait, would people be satisfied with something less than a "Thrilla in Manilla" fight? Don't you almost feel like you deserve something as entertaining as the Micky Ward and Arturo Gatti trilogy after being subjected to endless speculation, Arum's waffling and every arrogant thing Mayweather has to say?
I've always been of the belief that the two sides have knowingly pushed this fight back as long as they could to generate the hype and anticipation that would make this the biggest fight in boxing history. I don't doubt that they have disagreements about the details of the fight, but I don't think those details were the real reason the two waited this long.
However, now is the time. It may end up being the biggest fight in boxing history, but it might not be the best.
And that's what people are expecting.
Hit me up on the Twitter—it's the best way to spend the last year of existence.
