NHL Trade Rumors: Jarome Iginla, Ryan Getzlaf and Stars Who Will Stay Put
Calgary Flames winger Jarome Iginla is one of the many top-tier NHL players who could be dealt before the February 27 trading deadline, but he has what many of those players don't have, and that's loyalty.
Too often do players demand trades when the going gets tough. Either they want more money, or the pursuit of their first championship ring is far greater than being loyal to the team.
Iginla is a rare breed in sports, and although no player in hockey deserves to lift the Stanley Cup more, he doesn't show much, if any, frustration about the Flames' lack of postseason success in recent seasons.

After scoring his 500th career goal on Saturday, Iginla spoke about trade rumors surrounding him.
"Really it’s about the playoffs. I understand the trade talk and it’s part of sports. It’s hockey and fans are interested. It totally makes sense as far as the talk goes, but I believe as a player we can still make the playoffs. We do know it takes about 95-96 points to give ourselves a good shot, so we need to go on a run. Teams get injuries and that’s part of it. We’ve had our share. We’ve had some key guys out, but we stayed a float and hopefully we are getting some back and we go for a run, but it is about the playoffs.
"
Flames management hasn't shown any signs of being willing to deal Iginla anytime soon, and it seems like Iginla looks comfortable in Calgary.
Given the fact he is so loyal to the franchise and the fans adore him, I expect him to not be traded before the deadline.
I think he should be, and for the Flames, it's the best move for the franchise going forward. However, with the situation as it stands, it doesn't look like Iginla will be dealt.
Let's look at two other star players who will stay put this season.
Ryan Getzlaf
The Anaheim Ducks captain is the team's best playmaker and a franchise player you build a roster around, not trade away.
Ducks wingers like Corey Perry really benefit from the passing ability of Getzlaf, and if he were to leave the team would really hurt their depth at center.
With Anaheim ranked 22nd in the NHL in scoring, trading someone like Getzlaf who accounts for so much of the team's offense is a foolish move.
As the captain, his leadership is also very important to the Ducks, especially in seasons such as this where the team has struggled for much of the year.
Getzlaf has one more year left on his current deal which has a salary cap hit of $5.33 million, so if he's going to be traded, it will probably happen next season when he will be an upcoming free agent.
Eric Staal
The Carolina Hurricanes are a mess, but there is absolutely no reason to panic and trade star center and captain Eric Staal.
Staal is one of the team's few good players and he not only sells tickets, he is arguably the MVP of the team.
One reason Staal likely won't be dealt any time soon is because of his massive contract. For the next four seasons his contract has a salary cap hit of $8.25 million, which is too large for any contending team to take on.
Only a team that needs to reach the salary cap floor would strongly consider acquiring Staal without giving many large contracts back to the Hurricanes.
Staal is a great player, but his cap-burdening contract makes him an unattractive trade target this season.
