BCS Rankings: Alabama Football's Dominance Proves It Is Superior Team
Alabama did not make the same mistakes in the BCS championship that it made in its first meeting with LSU. The Crimson Tide defense was most dominant in this game, the game that meant the most.
Many fans, myself included, will still call for changes to the BCS that will prevent this scenario from happening again; still, you can't ignore the Tide's dominance.
The fact the Tide did dominate in a 21-0 shutout allows the BCS to dodge a bullet of criticism that was surely headed its way. If Bama had won by one score, you would be hearing public outcry right now questioning who the real national champions should be. Some may have even suggested a split.
Those arguments still have some credence, from a game-by-game standpoint in terms of wins and losses, as LSU beat Alabama during the regular season. Examining the head-to-head numbers in the two matchups shows a decided advantage for Alabama.
Not only did the Tide outscore the Tigers 27-9 in the two games, but they out-gained the Tigers in total yards, 679 to 331. Bama's total yardage in the BCS championship was 53 yards higher than LSU's total in both games combined.
Alabama was also plus-two in the turnover battle.
Those numbers show dominance, even if the series was split. The eyeball test showed that Bama had a more well-rounded team. While both squads have outstanding defenses, Bama's was little nastier. The Tide also had more effective playmakers on offense like Trent Richardson and better quarterback play from AJ McCarron.
Though I still would have loved to see this season culminated with a playoff, I know that is a dream. The reality is that Alabama is the national champion, and it is well deserved.
