LSU and 5 Teams That Didn't Show Up for a BCS Championship Game
Needless to say, the LSU Tigers laid an egg in the 2012 BCS National Championship Game, as they were manhandled from start to finish by the Alabama Crimson Tide.
Many thought it was not possible for a game to be as boring as the first meeting between these two teams, but this one was even worse.
The Tigers put on one of the most disappointing performances in BCS national championship history.
That said, they are not the only team that didn't show up for the BCS national championship. Here are five other teams who failed to show up on college football's biggest night of the year.
5. Miami—January 3, 2003
1 of 5The Miami Hurricanes came into the BCS national championship as heavy favorites against Ohio State, and while they were not blown out, nobody in the building thought the Buckeyes had a chance heading into the game.
Miami was No. 1 in the country with names like Willis McGahee, Andre Johnson, Frank Gore and Kellen Winslow on offense.
The defense was anchored by Jonathan Vilma and D.J. Williams at linebacker along with Antrel Rolle, Kelly Jennings and Sean Taylor in the secondary. Vince Wilfork was a backup defensive lineman.
While Ohio State was good particularly on the defensive side of the ball, the Buckeyes had nowhere near the talent of Miami, but they nonetheless came away with a 31-24, double-overtime victory.
4. Florida State—January 3, 2001
2 of 5Florida State may not have been the favorite heading into the BCS national championship against No. 1 Oklahoma, but they had not been held under 24 points all season.
Oklahoma held them to two, en route to a 13-2 beatdown of the Seminoles.
Senior quarterback Chris Weinke, who was coming off a Heisman Trophy campaign and headed for the NFL, did nothing to help the Florida State cause.
He is one of a few Heisman Trophy winners to fail miserably in the national championship game.
3. Nebraska—January 3, 2002
3 of 5While Nebraska may have been an underdog against No. 1 Miami, nobody thought they would get blown out to the tune of 37-14.
Like Weinke, quarterback Eric Crouch was coming off a Heisman Trophy from the previous month, only to fall flat on his face in the BCS national championship.
Nebraska had no answer for a Miami team that had more talent than it knew what to do with.
The Cornhuskers were dominated from start to finish and could not keep up with the speed and athleticism of Miami.
2. Oklahoma—January 4, 2005
4 of 5Even with skill players like Adrian Peterson, Mark Clayton and Mark Bradley, the Oklahoma Sooners were manhandled 55-19 by a talented USC team.
Though the win was eventually vacated by USC and they had players like Matt Leinart, Reggie Bush, LenDale White, Steve Smith and Dwayne Jarrett on offense, many thought Oklahoma would at least put up a fight.
That was not the case on this night, as No. 1 USC took them to the woodshed for a big win.
1. Ohio State—January 8, 2007
5 of 5Troy Smith is the third Heisman Trophy winner on this list and suffered perhaps the biggest disappointment of any of them.
His Ohio State Buckeyes came into their BCS national championship game undefeated and as the consensus No. 1 team in the country.
After a kickoff return for a touchdown by Ted Ginn Jr. to open the game, Ohio State was dominated after that.
The Buckeyes went on to lose 41-14 to a Florida Gators team that proved to be too much in the end, particularly for what appeared to be an out-of-shape Troy Smith.
