Alabama vs. LSU: Harvey Updyke Sighting Adds to Title Game Buzz
He wears red.
He creates a fervor across the land.
And he is rarely seen these days.
No, he's not Santa Claus. He's Alabama die-hard Harvey Updyke, of course.
That's right, Updyke—the one and only man who would allegedly poison a rival school's oak tree in rage—was spotted Monday on Bourbon Street in New Orleans before the 2012 BCS Championship Game...and the crowd went nuts.
According to Al.com, fans were "begging" for Updyke's autograph and a photo opportunity on Monday. Updyke, of course, allegedly poisoned the oak trees at Auburn's legendary Toomer's Corner after the 2011 Iron Bowl between the two rivals. He then allegedly called into the Paul Finebaum Radio Network to brag about it.
Who knew that Harvey Updyke would become a main attraction on Bourbon Street?
According to Al.com, Updyke said he "believes" he has a ticket to the BCS Championship Game on Monday night. My guess is he just showed up there and figured he would get a ticket from some Alabama fans. After all, when you (allegedly) do something stupid in support of your team, you're generally going to get a standing ovation in this sports-crazed nation we live in.
However, I'm guessing that there weren't many Auburn fans in New Orleans on Monday, because I'm pretty sure there would have been some incident involving the two parties.
Updyke has already been getting pressured to come out with a book, particularly from college football blogger Clay Travis. Updyke's trip to the 2012 BCS Championship Game would just be another explosive chapter in said book.
I just hope that Alabama fans don't go too far and carry Updyke on their shoulders if the Crimson Tide beat LSU.
