LSU vs. Alabama Rematch: 5 Reasons the Tigers Will Win the BCS Title Game

Ian HanfordJun 7, 2018

The LSU Tigers will face the Alabama Crimson Tide with the BCS National Championship on the line January 9th in the Superdome.

The Tigers and the Tide met once this season. It was a predictably defensive battle that finished 9-6 in favor of the Tigers.

LSU enters this game undefeated and ranked No. 1 in the nation. They have been scorching hot all season, and there is no reason to think that won't continue in New Orleans on Monday night.

The Tide are talented, but the Tigers have a special aura surrounding their team this season.

Here are five reasons LSU has the BCS National Championship in the bag:

Depth in the Backfield

1 of 5

LSU uses four running backs throughout each game. Rotating four ball-carriers allows the Tigers to give the defense different looks and keep their legs fresh.

Michael Ford is the leading rusher and best all-around talent in the Tiger backfield. He has 755 yards and seven touchdowns on the season.

Spencer Ware is more powerful than Ford and has one more touchdown than Ford on the season. He also has 700 yards on the ground.

Alfred Blue and Kenny Hilliard provide enormous depth. They have combined for over 800 yards and 15 touchdowns. Blue provides lightning speed and Hilliard is a bruising back between the tackles.

The Tigers would be lucky to have two of these four backs in their backfield. The problem is they have all four.

Well, that's not a problem for the Tigers. It's a problem for every team they face—in this case Alabama.

Experience at Quarterback

2 of 5

Jordan Jefferson and Jarrett Lee have both taken snaps behind center this season. They have very different skill sets, but they are both experienced seniors.

Lee is the pocket passer. He threw for 14 touchdowns and three interceptions on the year. Lee may not start the title game, but he provides leadership and a different look behind center if Les Miles wants to go that direction.

Jefferson is a dual-threat quarterback with an emphasis on his legs. He has had turnover issues in the past, but only threw one interception on a limited basis this season. His legs accounted for over 200 yards and three touchdowns.

The Tigers do not have a Heisman quarterback to turn to in their big game. However, they do have two solid arms capable of winning a game.

Look for both quarterbacks to see the field in New Orleans on Monday.

Confidence

3 of 5

LSU enters the BCS National Championship Game with a 12-0 record. One of those 12 victories is over the Tide in Week 10.

The Tigers would have been confident entering this game without a previous victory over Alabama, but with the victory they are supremely confident.

Confidence goes a long way in football. The Tigers will be flying around the field and will channel that emotion into big plays on both sides of the ball.

Tiger players know that many fans already dub their team the 2011 national champions. They have had an incredible season, and they have been tested enough to avoid any slip-ups in a big game.

A victory over Alabama in Week 10 gives LSU an advantage from an emotional standpoint. They beat the Tide once and they were outperformed.

Now they are thinking, what could we do to the Tide if we played well?

Perimeter Advantage

4 of 5

LSU holds a distinct advantage on the perimeter. The Tigers possess two All-American cornerbacks, and the Tide lack a true playmaker at wide receiver.

Morris Claiborne and Tyrann Mathieu should have no trouble covering the Tide receivers. Ron Brooks, Tharold Simon and Eric Reid will handle their business in dime and nickel packages as well.

The Tide's leading receiver is Marquis Maze. He has just over 600 yards and one touchdown on the season. All-American running back Trent Richardson is their second-leading receiver with 300-plus yards and three touchdowns.

Alabama relies on its ground attack, but will have to make a few big plays through the air to win this game.

Don't expect the Tiger secondary to give up any ground. Their talent and incredible depth will provide tough sledding for Alabama on the perimeter.

Home Cookin'

5 of 5

Alabama fans will travel, as they always do. However, this game is in the Superdome.

The Superdome is in New Orleans, which happens to be in Louisiana. The Tigers happen to hail from Louisiana as well.

OK, you get the point. It may be close to home for the Tide and their fans may travel, but LSU holds a home-field advantage in this game.

The Tigers will be comfortable in front of a raucous crowd. Their fans outnumbering Tide fans will provide a tiny advantage in a mostly even game on paper.

LSU wants the Superdome to be loud and preferably filled with plenty of "Geaux Tigers" chants.
