Owen Daniels Injury: Texans TE Reportedly Suffered Broken Hand Against Bengals

Donald WoodJan 8, 2012

The Houston Texans have been dealt a raw hand when it comes to injuries all season, but news may be getting even worse now that stellar tight end Owen Daniels reportedly broke his hand.

Despite losing starting quarterbacks Matt Schaub and Matt Leinart as well as defensive captain Mario Williams for the season, the Texans have continued to march on with T.J. Yates as the man under center.

As talented as Daniels was, he wasn’t being targeted as much by Yates, but was instead more of a blocking tight end who would go out on routes as a distraction.

The Houston Chronicle gives us the view from inside the locker room and what’s next for Daniels.

"Teammates were exchanging handshakes in the postgame dressing room, and Daniels was asking them to take it easy on him, worried that his right hand could be broken. Daniels will undergo an MRI but should be able to play because he didn’t suffer a compound fracture in which the bone penetrates the skin and has to be surgically reattached."

When the bone isn’t coming through that’s always a good thing, but in all reality, the Texans should be fine even if Daniels is limited.

The Texans could bring Daniels in on downs they need the tight end to block and bring in backup Joel Dreessen on passing situations where they need the end as a catching option.

While Daniels wasn’t a very big option before, with the increased run stopping abilities of the Baltimore Ravens, the Texans may have to play far more two tight end sets to make up for the additional men in the box for the Ravens.
